Henderson, Kentucky is a small town in the eastern part of the state of Kentucky. It is located on the Tug River and has a population of about 2,900 people. The Henderson post office was established in 1881 and is currently closed. Henderson is known for its apple orchards and its rich history. The first Europeans to visit Henderson were Dutch traders who stopped there during their travels through central Kentucky in 1692. In 1795, French explorers named it La Grange after Count Pierre deGrasse, Sieur de la Grange (died 1799). After the United States acquired independence from Great Britain in 1776, General George Washington built Fort Knox here to protect American settlers from British troops. In 1801, Colonel James A. Hardin organized a volunteer militia to fight against Mexican forces advancing into eastern Kentucky from Mexico City. The Battle of Henderson took place on September 12th near present-day Henderson when Mexican soldiers attacked American forces under Colonel Hardin. Twenty-five Americans were killed and fifty-six wounded before Mexican troops withdrew without further incident. In 1881, Henderson was renamed for President Chester Aiken following his inauguration as president of the United States that year. The name change reflected America's increasing awareness of Japan's role in World War II as well as Henderson's close proximity to Japan at that time. Japanese Americans living in nearby Lexington had urged President Aiken to select Henderson as one of nine communities across the nation they wanted designated as "Japantowns." However, because no action was taken until after his death in 1984, many believe that he never intended to create such a community within Davidson County but simply used it for political purposes only! Today, Henderson remains an agricultural center with apple orchards being its primary industry; however recent construction projects have included new housing developments and a hospital/medical clinic serving the town’s population growth over recent years! The town began developing as a commercial center after the opening of two railroads in 1881 and 1887. Henderson became an important transportation hub due to its location at one of the few points where both roads passed through central Kentucky. The community also prospered thanks to its growing agricultural sector and its status as a manufacturing center for items such as shoes, hats, and cigars. In 1961, Henderson experienced another boom when it became a part of the new racial integration policy of Kentucky Governor John Fenton. At this time, black residents started moving into Henderson from other parts of central Kentucky in order to take advantage of its opportunities. The community's growth continued throughout the 1960s and 1970s as white residents left for better jobs or moved out of state altogether. In recent years, however, Henderson has seen significant decline due to economic issues such as low job security and lack of affordable housing.
Henderson was founded in 1792 by James Henderson and his wife, Lydia. It was the first town in Kentucky. Henderson became a county seat in 1825.
