In 1984, they opened their second store – this time at 309 E 12th Street – which served as their headquarters until 2000 when they moved into their current building at 311 W Main Street. Henderson is the county seat and it has a population of 3,549 as of the 2016 estimate. Henderson was founded in 1836 by Captain James Gentry and his wife Elizabeth Henderson. The first post office in Henderson was established on December 15, 1839. The name of the town originated from Captain James Gentry's daughter-in-law's maiden name "Henderson". The community site was chosen because it would have good soil for farming and its geographical location allowed easy access to haul goods to market. In 1860, General John Custer died while campaigning in western Kentucky; his death led to a social unrest that swept the state. In an effort to quell these protests, Governor Donelson appointed Colonel Samuel Tilden as commander of Ulysses S Grant's forces in eastern Kentucky to suppress the riots. As part of this assignment, Colonel Tilden traveled through Henderson on May 16th when he made his appearance before the local courthouse crowd demanding restraint from what he saw as uncontrolled violence across eastern Kentucky. This incident helped create a rift between Henderson and Louisville which would eventually lead to Union victory during the American Civil War In 1865, Henderson became part of newly formed Marshall County after it was separated from Hardin County along with all other southern counties following Reconstruction efforts in America following the end of World War II . At that time there were only six white residents living among 3,549 total residents within Marshall County according to2010 census data . With less than 1% black residents residing within its borders prior to incorporation into Marshall County there wasn't much opportunity for African Americans interested in seeking opportunities here until recent times when they've seen an increase due primarily to job opportunities available outside traditional agricultural areas . ever since then many people who are not currently involved with agriculture or simply do not have access to land nearby have found their way here either through family connections or friends who know someone who does business here
