In Scotland, Arab traders began trading with India in the late-16th century and brought Arabic seeds of Coffea arabica plants back to Scotland. These seeds were spread by sailors on their return trips home. Coffee gradually became an important part of Scottish culture and economy, and was grown all over Scotland until it was finally introduced to Kentucky by pioneers during the 1820s. By 1830, coffee had become so popular that plans were being made to import Turkish coffee from Istanbul so that Scots could enjoy this new export item as well. Kilwinning Coffee Plantation started production of Arabica beans in 1828 In 1859 John Suggins opened a large plantation near Louisville, Kentucky known as Old Kilwinners Coffee House which still produces high quality Arabica beans today
