Georgetown was once a thriving small town located in the heart of Kentucky. In 1811, Georgetown was founded by James Wilkinson and his brother John Wilkinson. The two brothers were hired to build a new town on the site of what is now Georgetown. The town quickly grew and became an important center for trade and commerce in central Kentucky. By 1834, Georgetown had become an independent village with its own government and school system. In 1840, Georgetown commissioned the architect Andrew Jackson Downing to design a new courthouse and jail complex. The project was completed in 1845 and functioned as the first public building in Georgetown. Over time, other important buildings such as the Post Office, Baptist Church, Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church and Methodist School were built in Georgetown. In 1865, after more than 150 years of growth at Georgetown, the community experienced a major setback when it was burned by Union troops during the American Civil War. However, within five years of the fire occurred another major development which led to increased tourism within Georgetown: The construction ofhentryhill Resort which attracted many tourists from all over the United States to enjoy beautiful views of downtown Louisville while residing within walking distance of all their favorite shops and restaurants. Today’s Historic District – which encompasses portions of both downtown Louisville (the original district) as well as Hefty Hill – is one of Lexington’s most popular tourist destinations dueits mix of pre-war architecture with modern amenities including Walker Hall Museum/Theater & Park (opened in 2009), numerous restaurants (including several high-end steak houses), embassies including that from Egypt (opened in 1974),and rich history associated with both Confederate Generals Jubal Early & Stonewall Jackson .
