The store that housed the galleries closed in 1978, but the galleries remain open to the public and are still operated by the Prentice family. Georgetown is a small town in southern Kentucky that sits at the intersection of two routes: US–270 and KY Route 52. The population of Georgetown was 4,811 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville-Jefferson County, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Georgetown was first settled by Europeans in the early 18th century, and was named for Sir George Washington's estate on the Rappahannock River. The first collegeized students arrived in America at Georgetown College in 1792. In 1825, when Kentucky became a state, Georgetown became its capital. Geography has not been impediment to growth here; during the last decade alone, construction projects totaling $1 billion have taken place in downtown Georgetown – including a new high school, an arena for basketball and volleyball teams, and a new courthouse – all while preserving some of its old buildings along with their Indigenous architecture and artifacts. Today’s Georgetown is home to more than just residents; it also includes businesses such as GEICO (the nation’s largest auto insurance company), Macy’s Department Store (one of America’s oldest department stores), PNC Financial Services (a major bank), FedEx Ground ($7 billion in business services exports annually) and many other commercial tenants who contribute significantly to local economic development. Georgetown was a small town in the southeastern portion of present day Kentucky, United States. The town was located on the banks of the Ohio River and it is known for its architecture, including the Georgetown University School of Law. The town was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1784. The name "Georgetown" comes from an Indian chief's name, sachem or war captain, that was given to them by General George Washington during his visit to this area in 1785. The town rapidly grew due to its strategic location on the river and its access to timber and other resources. In 1812, Georgetown became the capital of Kentucky when President James K. Polk moved it from Louisville. It remained as such until 1821 when it became part of Tennessee after that state's admission into the Union. In 1828, Georgetown was renamed Nashville because Nashville had been chosen as the new capital after Congress passed a bill authorizing this change. In 1861, Confederate forces besieged Confederate general Robert E Battlefield at Georgetown (now Donelson) Hill near Nashville while he tried to surrender his army to Union General Ulysses S Grant. Battle occurred between Union troops and Confederate regulars as well as cavalry elements led by First Lieutenant John C Taylor and Private Abel Perryman who were killed;[1] however no one died in what has come to be called "the bloodiest engagement of the American Civil War".[2][3] However, despite this tragedy at battle field National Geographic magazine named Georgetown one of America’s 50 best places to live in 2010.[4] Today, Georgetown is home mainly to students at Georgetown University School of Law where some 130 attorneys are employed full time in various legal practices statewide throughout Kentucky/Tennessee

At its peak, Georgetown had a population of about 3,000 people. It declined after the American Revolution and did not regain its prominence until the 1960s when it became an important center for education and politics.
