Georgetown is a town in Fayette County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Georgetown is home to Georgetown University and the Georgetown Guitar School. The town of Georgetown was founded in 1825 by Captain James Wilkinson and his family as an agricultural village on the east bank of the River Thames near what is now London, Kentucky. The name "Georgetown" was derived from the word "germane", meaning "of or pertaining toGermany." The first permanent settler in what is now Georgetown was Capt. John Wilkinson's son-in-law, Job Taylor. In 1827, German immigrants founded a gristmill on the riverbank just outside of town which became one of Georgetown's most important resources for bread and flour until it closed in 1861. Captain James Wilkinson passed away in 1827 but his wife Harriet continued trying to make a home for her family until she achieved success with their second farmstead on Meadow Branch Road about six miles southeast of town. In 1828 Major David Dixon moved into this new farmstead and built Dixon's Tavern which still stands today as one of Georgetown's most popular tourist attractions. It served as both a community center and jail during its early years before becoming an innkeeper's hall over time In 1830 Daniel Boone visited GeorgetOWN while he was exploring newly discovered Western Kentucky and thought it would be interesting to settle there if only because he had heard that there were many rich soil claims in that area . He met with Captain John Wilkinson who recommended him against moving back east because he didn't want any part of Cherokee Nation (which then included parts of modern-day Kentucky). Instead Boone decided to move westward into what is now West Virginia where he explored numerous territory including Logan County before finally settling down at Transylvania Court House near Logansport in 1776 when war broke out between Great Britain and America over Canada . georgeous! In 1793, he attended a dinner at which General George Washington presented him with a set of dishes from Georgetown's restaurant, the Mount Vernon Tavern. In 1801, he attended another dinner at which General Washington presented him with an estate near Lexington that he later donated to Georgetown University. In 1861, when Confederate forces invaded Kentucky, they captured and burned Georgetown as part of their campaign to take control of the state. The town was rebuilt and renamed Louisville after Confederate general Robert Ewing's home city in southeastern Kentucky. However, by 1865 all vestiges of Confederate activity had been abandoned in Louisville and Georgetown became once again a small rural community. Today, both towns maintain close ties to each other through cultural exchanges and social events such as Christmas concerts or basketball games between the two towns' teams (the Geostationary Falcons). In addition to its historical significance as one ofKentucky's earliest communities post-war (it joins Lexington as one of only two cities in the Commonwealth notOHired into Federal government service), Georgetown also boasts some attractive attractions including its many restaurants/bars/nightlife outletsand Stonington Square shopping mall which anchors downtown."
