Georgetown is a small town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. Georgetown was founded in 1802 by Captain John Smith and his family. The first post office in Georgetown was established in 1803. In the late 1850s, Andrew Jackson visited Georgetown and it became known as "Jackson's birthplace." In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell commanded an army near Georgetown and ordered its destruction; this destroyed much of the community and led to its abandonment. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant decided to march on Lexington after learning that Confederate General Jubal Early had taken refuge there with 10,000 men. When he arrived at night, he found only a few hundred residents remaining in Georgetown; most of them had fled before his arrival. The town has been restored multiple times since it was abandoned following the destruction caused by Robert Ewell's raid on Georgetown in 1861. The current incarnation of Georgetown was built between 1929 and 1933 by local contractor JW Hutton for $5 million dollars using Federal money provided through the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The project included renovation of many buildings within downtown including the old court house which now serves as a museum/gallery/. During World War II, several thousand unemployed war veterans who had gathered around Georgetown were moved into new housing located outside of town while their homes were renovated or replaced with more permanent structures such as hospitals or schools.
