Henry Clay, an American politician and avid outdoorsman, was born in Georgetown, Kentucky on October 6, 1807. He attended the University of Kentucky and then became a lawyer. In 1825 he married Margaret Clary and they moved to Washington D.C. The Clay family lived in the home of John Quincy Adams until his death in 1849. Clay served as United States Secretary of State from 1853 to 1861 and as Minister to England from 1861 to 1865. He also served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1860. After his term as president was completed, he traveled throughout America before returning to Georgetown where he died on July 9, 1865.
Georgetown is a city in and the county seat of Georgetown County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Georgetown was Nicholas Gregory, who arrived in 1792. He named his new town after himself, as he desired to promote self-reliance and individualism considered important among early British settlers in America. The town grew slowly until 1800 when a group of Methodist Baptists led by Reverend John A. Macpherson built the first church in Georgetown. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson invaded Kentucky and occupied what is now eastern Indiana; during this time, Georgetown became an officer's quarters for Jackson's army camped nearby on the banks of the river near present day University Park. After Indian Removal in 1830, many KY citizens decided to leave their home state for opportunities elsewhere – including Reverend James Witherspoon who settled at Georgetown and founded Witherspoon Academy which remain there to this day (now Southern Illinois University) In 1835–36, George Rogers Clark made another attempt unsuccessfully to cross the Ohio River into Kentucky from Tennessee while battle raged between Union forces under Confederate Major General Robert Ewell Hardee and Union cavalry under Ulysses S Grant near Perryville broadside on October 15th.. On December 12th 1865 over 400 men from Lexington joined with 200 more from Louisville while skirmishing near Danville northeast of Lexington towards Boydton Bottom where they were repulsed but opened fire killing three men including Captain Samuel Henson SMITH In 1870–71 building began on what would become one of America’s most famous universities when James Buchanan was inaugurated as President Of The United States at Ford’s Theatre located across Market Street from today’s Brown Hall buildings By 1888 several stores had been built around present day Hyatt Place before brick walls were erected enclosing much of downtown [later renamed] “Downtown” Forbes magazine ranked Georgetown second only to New York City as one of America’s most fashionable cities during its heyday with fine homespun cloth retailers such as Gertrude Stein and Fanny Kemble living cheek by jowl with skyscraper office blocks along Market Street
