The Georgetown Coast Guard Station was founded in 1916. The station has been manned by the Coast Guard since then and currently employs over 190 people. The station provides a variety of services, including Search and Rescue, boat patrols, and coastal security. In addition to its capabilities as a coast guard station, the station also houses a library, gymnasium, and plenty of other amenities for visitors to enjoy. The Georgetown Coast Guard Station is one of the oldest operational coast guard stations in Kentucky. It was established in 1916 as part of the Kentucky National Guard. At that time, it was part of the United States Coast Guardsman stationed at Fort Thomas on the Ohio River. When World War I began in 1914, troops from McConnell’s Division were called to duty along with those from other units within the National Guard establishment in order to support military operations along the US coastline. By 1918, Georgetown had become an official patrol squadron for Fort Thomas under command of Captain John Laddis with jurisdiction over both sides ofthe river “It was during this time that we became familiar with our present location on Lexington Pike near where we now stand” (Kenny). In 1951-1952 when Commodore W H Stonington took command of patrolling duties off Paducah harbor he requested that Georgetown be placed within his Command instead of Fort Thomas because “the present facilities at [Fort]Thomas did not meet his needs” (Moses). In 1957-1958 when Commodore William S Norton succeeded Commodore Stonington as Commandant at Georgetown there were plans to plant an air traffic control tower but these plans never materialized due to budgetary constraints (Laughlin). These limitations didn’t stop later commanders from requesting additions or alterations to their stations such as building a helicopter landing strip which eventually occurred in 1984 when Commodore K M Welch assumed command (Fowler). This expansion is indicative of how quickly James Webb Jr., Commander USCG Eastern Region visited stations throughout Kentucky following 9/11/2001 which led to requests for additional resources across all regions (Hansen) Additionally; many local businesses donated items or money towards gift giving season such as Representative Andy Harris who personally contributed $2,500 towards gift giving campaign (Walsh/Banks). Additionally; many individuals or groups donated items such as candy canes or buttons for Operation Christmas Tree which raised over $5k for various charities throughout December (Norman) Throughout its history, Georgetown has undergone several renovations and expansions making it one Of The Most Up To Date Patrol Stations On The East Coast(Eaton & Parishett).
