The Georgetown, Kentucky Army National Guard unit has a rich and colorful history dating back to the Revolutionary War. The unit was organized on December 3, 1775, as the 1st Battalion of the 6th Regiment of Light Dragoons under Colonel John Collins. In 1812, the 2nd Battalion became part of the 4th Brigade in the 7th Infantry Division and fought at Buena Vista and Montero Creek. The battalion again served in battle during World War I as part of VIII Corps before being disbanded on October 15, 1918. During World War II, the battalion was reactivated as Company B (the “Green Berets”) of 1005th General Services Administration Unit on October 25, 1942. The battalion served in Europe until July 1945 when it returned to America and became part of 101st Airborne Division where it fought in Operation Overlord. After liberation from Japan, company A moved to Okinawa where they played a major role in pacification efforts until their withdrawal on September 29, 1946. On January 1, 1947 company A was reorganized into Company E (the “Graybacks”). The Georgetown Army National Guard unit has seen many changes over its centuries-old history but one thing that has never changed is its love for service to country and its dedication to protect our nation's citizens. From his home state of Kentucky through deployments throughout ournation's wars- both past and present- Colonel John Collins has been an important member of this unit and we are proud to call him our namesake/founder/first sergeant/orchardist extraordinaire!

The community grew rapidly during the 19th century, and by 1870 it had reached its current size. Today, Georgetown is a vibrant center of culture and commerce, with a growing population of residents who enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing and hiking. The history of Georgetown begins with John C. Butler. He was born in 1793 in what is now Moorestown, New Jersey and moved to Georgetown after leaving college to pursue a career in law enforcement. In 1825, Butler purchased land near what is now downtown Georgetown from General James Hardin for $1 per acre. This location would prove to be pivotal in the growth of the community; throughout its history, it has been an important stop on trade routes between Kentucky and neighboring states. Butler soon began to build his home here; he named his property "Bellefontaine" after one of his daughters. He soon became known as one of the most influential men in Georgetown because of his extensive legal practice and political donations. In 1829, he married Martha Ballou; they would have five children together before she died in 1861 at age 46 due to tuberculosis symptoms brought on by her husband’s work schedule). From Bellefontaine, Butler continued to contribute money to various local causes until his death at the age of 83 years old in 1865 from pneumonia caused by overwork contracted while practicing law full-time。 After Butler's death, much work began on developing Georgetown into an independent townspeople quickly took control of their surroundings - many improvements were made including new streets/alleys being laid out straightaways instead of being serpentine like those present today), enlarged public square (now called Fountain Square), addition to courthouse (now known as First Street Courthouse), additions to schools (now three high schools: Central High School (founded 1888)), construction begins on what would ultimately become Riverfront Park which opened up below Glover Street just south of Market Square on October 10th 1889 ().
