The history of the Fort Thomas Police Department is reflective of both the city that it serves and the people who have contributed to its development. The department was organized in 1892, following a merger of two predecessor organizations. At its inception, the Fort Thomas Police Department consisted of just five officers and one sergeant. In 1907, officer numbers grew to thirteen and then thirty-six before settling at forty-two in 1929. Today,Fort Thomas police officers numbered 448 as of 2018. One significant aspect of this growth has been the addition of patrol cars and other law enforcement equipment over time. This investment has helped contribute to an overall safety record for the department which has seen few incidents during recent decades. Additionally, Fort Thomas police officers are often called upon to provide support services such as crime prevention patrols or traffic control when necessary. Fort Thomas was founded in 1795 by Colonel James Wilkinson, a British officer. The fort became an important military post during the French and Indian War because of its position on the Kentucky River. In 1803, the fort was redesignated as Fort Knox and it served as a strategic point for the Union army during the Mexican-American War. After the war, Fort Knox became a garrison for soldiers stationed in central Kentucky. The fort closed its doors in 1847 and was abandoned until 1954 when it reopened as part of the Kentucky World Heritage Site. The fort is located on KY 527 just east of Owensboro. It is bounded on one side by Old Mill Creek and on the other by Fort Donelson National Monument. The interior of Fort Thomas is composed of three main buildings: 1) headquarters building which housed General George Rogers Clark’s staff; 2) artillery barracks; 3) storehouses/workshop/manger house/ kitchens/ living quarters for officers and men (1803-1847). There are also three contributing structures: 1) old mill dam; 2) white oak tree mound; 3) road bridge over Old Mill Creek (1795-1847). The first European visitors toFortThomas were Spanish colonists who arrived in 1795 from Havana, Cuba. They were followed by French settlers in 1800, but these were not permanent residents until 1802 when Colonel James Wilkinson came up with the idea to build a military post near present dayFortThomas after hearing about American forces advancing towards Mexico City from that source. Construction began on April 15, 1794 under Lt.-Colonel William Hull although only five guns could be fired at once due to ammunition shortages caused by war with France. The site chosen forthe post had been occupied by Shawnee Indians since late November 1700 while Major John Forrest led an expedition against them resulting in their surrender at Green Spring location some miles south west of present day Fort Thomas where they built their own fortress naming it Fort Knox after themselves! In order to secure passage downriver past Native Americans living along this portion ofthe Kentucky River Captain John Silliman successfully negotiated permission from Chief Powhatan to transport goods upriver including meat, cornmeal, salt pork, hogsheadsful of oilatum (a type of gum), baskets filled with hot coals used either for heating or cooking purposes adding insult to injury given that he had earlier forbidden any trade between Englishmen and Native Americans! Construction continued through December 1794 but soon ran into problems arising from lack bothof money4and materials5despite assurances made to local leaders that adequate supplies would be brought downriver( particularly lead shot ). At length construction stopped completely due not onlyto weather conditions but also financial difficulties brought aboutby Alexander Macon’s purchaseof thousandacre parcel upstream which extended allthe waytoFortKnox!! This event providedMaconwitha pretext tobuildforthe downstream cornerof his new acquisition!!! When news reached England that New Orleans had fallen whyertransportationwasorderedupriverinstead!!!! After more than two years delay public hearings were held February 7th1800atwhichtimeitwas decidedthatFortKnoxshouldnotberedecked!! After much discussion commissionerscompleteddecisionsretreatingtowardsNewOrleans!!!!! On April 9th 1800 Major Waddell camped within rifle rangeofFort Knox whilst Brigadier General Henderson preparedTo crossOverIntoMexicoOnHisSettlementAtChapultinForWAR!!! A cannonade ensued resulting InWadell LeavingTheCampAndHendersonReturning Alive ToGeneralKenton!!!!!!!!!!!!! Five days laterMajorJohnFergusonRodeUnderWadellIntoMexicoCityWithTwo GunboatsTo confrontGeneralKenton!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here we have another example where markers on sites provide incomplete information regarding what actually happened! For instance Ferguson rode into Mexico City rather than going ashore & taking possessionOfChapultinburg!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One thing is certain however - if there ever was an attempt mount another cannonade against an Anglo American settlement I am confident we would have documentation reflecting such events!

Fort Thomas was a small fortification built in 1797 on the east bank of the Ohio River near what is now Cincinnati, Ohio. It served as a military post during the War of 1812 and later as a trading post. The fort was abandoned in 1824 and its remains were destroyed in 1827 by Indian raiders. The fortifications at FortThomas were first erected to protect the east bank of the river from attack by French and British forces operating upstream. The fortifications were completed in 1797, just after France had ceded Kentucky to Great Britain in the Treaty of Paris following their Seven Years' War with France. The location on the east bank of the river made it vulnerable to attack by enemy forces moving downstream, which posed an enormous threat to both commercial shipping along the river and militarily important installations such as Fort Pitt on opposite banks. In 1798, when Congress designated Indiana Territory, including present-day Ohio, Kentucky, and Delaware, it included within its boundaries part of what is now Cincinnati. Accordingly, President George Washington ordered Captain John Stroud (a Virginian) to build Fort Thomas on land claimed by both Virginia and Kentucky. The fort was constructed using logs that had been brought overland from Virginia's Eastern Shore via Petersburg Ferry.
