Naval History and Heritage Center in Fort Thomas, Kentucky has a rich navy gift history. Fort Thomas was a post established by the U.S. Army in 1795 on the west bank of the Ohio River, about six miles from present-day Cincinnati, Ohio. The fort was designed to protect both the river and American interests along its border with British India. The fort served as an important militarybase for many years and was home to up to 10,000 soldiers during the War of 1812. In 1814, Fort Thomas surrendered to General Andrew Jackson after a three-month siege. Afterward, it became a U.S.–Canadian garrison until 1821 when it reverted back to American control. In 1830, Fort Thomas came under construction at what is now Mound City and was completed in February of that year. It was named for Colonel James Kenedy (1756–1825), who had played a significant role in leading Kentucky into Confederation with America in 1792 and later served as governor of Kentucky from 1801 to 1802. Kenedy also donated land for the fortification which grew into one of Kentucky’s most notable landmarks today. During its time at Mound City, Fort Thomas served as an important trading post between Cincinnati and British India and also acted as a base for Native Americans living near its walls who used it as their summer residence before moving back inside during winter months when colder weather threatened access to their herds of buffalo or other animals they raised for food purposes. In 1840, following Indian Removal policy enacted by President James Ketchum, all Native Americans living within two miles of FortThomas were forced onto reservations where they continued to live under fenced-in conditions until finally being allowed unconditionally to return home in 1865 following passage of The Indian Removal Act of 1830.
