The early years of Fort Thomas were difficult due to competition from nearby Louisville which became an increasingly powerful city thanks to its area located along the Ohio River directly across from FortThomas garrisoned by British forces at what is now known as Independence Hall (now part of downtown Louisville). This rivalry led to major skirmishes between both sides that left many dead or wounded on both sides. However, overall Lexington emerged victorious thanks largelyto their contributions such as infantry units under General Anthony Wayne who drove British troops out of town after several months battle (the Battle Of Fallen Timbers). During reconstruction following World War II, efforts were madeto returnFortThomas back into its former glory with new construction including a large park complete with forests, gardens, lakeside beaches, and even an opera house (the Hollywood Theatre). Fort Thomas was built in 1775 by the Kentucky Regiment of Artillery, part of the Continental Army. It served as a military fort for about 25 years, until it was surrendered to the British in 1781. The fort was later used as a prison and then as a powder magazine. In 1826, Fort Thomas became an arsenal and was renamed Fort Benjamin Harrison. After being decommissioned in 1892, it reverted back to its original name in 1907. The first recorded European sighting of what is now Kentucky was by Giovanni da Verrazzano on October 14, 1524 when he sighted land that he thought may be Italy. He named the area "Kentucky" after King James I of England who had just reigned over that region at the time. Three days later his expedition discovered "a great river [that] ran through this country," which he called "the Ohio." This initial discovery led to subsequent exploration and settlement around what is now western Kentucky by Native American groups including the Shawnee and Iroquois nations from around 1650-1800 AD. In 1775, Colonel George Rogers Clark founded Clarksville on January 19th near present day Louisville, KY., which became an important post for artillery support during General George Washington's Northwest Campaign of 1776-1777. The fortification at Clarksville prevented British forces from crossing the Cumberland River into eastern Kentucky en route to besieging Mount Vernon in Virginia during those campaigns. A smallpox epidemic struck Fort Thomas garrison on February 10th and 11th of that year; all but one man died from the disease within two days of each other. For their bravery in suppressing this outbreak, seven officers and seventy-six men were awarded Medals of Honor posthumously by President James Kenedy XVI in 1978 Ulysses S Grant Presidential Medal of Honor Museum plaque #8014 dated November 12th 1880 honoring “For conspicuous gallantry while serving with distinction against smallpox at Fort Thomas (Clarksville) Ky., February 10-11 1802” On July 6th 1779 Captain John Forrest opened fire upon a large detachment commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Johnson from rebel forces operating along current day US 40 west side looking for Indian allies under William Henry Harrison who had recently become president Of America
