Fort Thomas was founded in 1799 as a military post on the Cumberland River. It became a center for coffee production in the 1800s, and its coffee beans are considered some of the best in the world. In 1912, Fort Thomas became one of thirty-six townships in Kentucky to be chartered under the newly created state government. The townspeople began buying coffee from Arab farmers along the Cumberland River and selling it to local residents. By 1920, Fort Thomas had become one of the largest coffeeproducing towns in Kentucky. The first production mills were built at nearby Somerset County in 1859. By 1901, Fort Thomas had eleven mills that produced over two million cups of ground coffee each day. In 1922, the Crown Coffee Company was founded by businessmen J C Hargrave and Clarence Wirtz with support from U S Senator James M Smith. The company produced high-quality espresso beans for delivery to local cafes and restaurants throughout Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1949, Crown Coffee merged with another Chattanooga-based company, United States Coffee Corporation (USCC), to form United States Coffee Corporation/Crown (UCS). At UCS, management tried to modernize their production techniques while still keeping their quality standards high. Today, UCS produces over sixty thousand pounds of ground coffee per day for more than two hundred thousand cafés across America and Europe.

The Dutch colonized Indonesia and started buying coffee from Muslim traders, which led to their discovery of large areas of rich coffee grounds that could be processed into high quality beans. The Dutch also became interested in trade with Asia, which allowed them to learn about different coffees and develop their own roasting techniques. The Dutch tasted some of these new coffees while trading with Japan, where they found javanese – a type of bean that was not used much back then – gave them a better flavor than what they had been using back home. After tasting this new variety, the Dutch decided that they wanted to try growing their own javanese bean so they set out on a journey southward from Java towards Sulawesi (now Celebes Islands) specifically looking for this type of bean. They arrived at an area called Pulauan Gadut where they met local people who told them about this very specific strain that was good for making fine cupcakes or cake but unfortunately not suitable for brewing coffee because there was no space available nearby for plantation operations (the land around Pulauan Gadut had been given away as part of an agreement between the Sultanate and Holland). However, due to some good businessmanship on behalf of Philips Coffee Factory owner Adriaen van der Sar (who later became known as Lord James), van der Sar managed to persuade his friends/colonists at Jakarta’s Fort Jervis west side not only allow him permission but also provide him with financial support so he could start up his own coffee plantation near present day Jakarta called Nusa Tenggara Utara (NTU). This is whencoffee began having its definitive form as we know it today! In 1886 AD Philips finally completed its acquisitionof Nusa Tenggara Utara from Adriaen van der Sar resulting in world’s first Gourmet Coffee shop opened inside THE NEW HOTEL IN JAKARTA - PURE ROAST COFFEE HOUSE

Fort Thomas was a strategic location in Kentucky during the Revolutionary War. It was built on the site of an old French trading post, and served as a military and supply depot for the British forces fighting against America. In 1775, Fort Thomas became the headquarters of General George Washington’s army during his campaign against British forces in what is now West Virginia. The fort played an important role in the Battle of Bunker Hill, and also suffered from several attacks by Native Americans. By 1800, Fort Thomas had been abandoned and its materials reused as part of construction projects at nearby Covington. However, it remains a popular tourist destination today and is still used for various purposes including storage buildings and a museum.
Fort Thomas was built in 1799 by General Arthur St. Clair, who led a British force against the Shawnee Indians. The fort was named for the then- prospering town of Fort Wayne, Indiana. In 1803, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Vicksburg to Fort Thomas after their victory over Native American forces at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. On July 4, 1805, General James K. Polk arrived at Fort Thomas and ordered its abandonment as part of his plan to build a network of military posts along the Mississippi River.
