Fort Thomas was a military post on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River in what is now Fort Wayne, Indiana. It was established by Colonel James Wilkinson in 1779 as part of the Northwest Indian War effort to block French and British traders from reaching the mouth of the river. The fort was abandoned in 1783 after French and British forces destroyed it. The site of Fort Thomas has been occupied by numerous sites over time, including a small village and an American trading post. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne burned down the village to prevent its use by the French during their war with Britain. The present-day fort was built on the ruins of one of these posts in 1825. In 1859, Fort Thomas became home to Confederate troops during the American Civil War while Union troops were stationed at nearby Frankfort. Afterward, it reverted back to Confederate control until it was surrendered by Union forces on November 11, 1865. After that point, it served as a prison for Union soldiers before being decommissioned in 1870. It has been used as a park since then.
