Some of the earliest coffee beans were grown on Roanoke Island in North Carolina in 1765. Fort Thomas was founded by General James Clark Ross in 1802, and soon became a center for trade with sailors from all over the world. Coffee was an important part of Ross's military career and he began to import more beans from Africa as well. The first café on Main Street in Fort Thomas was called The Merchants Coffee House, which operated from 1811-1814. In 1816, The National Coffee Company was established, and it is still one of the most popular retail businesses in Fort Thomas today. It operates three cafes: One near downtown, another at Epps Park off State Route 2, and a third located on Market Street just north of The Hennepin Brewery. In 1905, John Denton started brewing his own coffee at his home on Buffalo Road. He named his business The Star Roasters because it was the only store open during their early days that sold whole beans direct to consumers instead of through merchants like those mentioned earlier. Denton continued to operate his business until 1962 when he sold it to Angelo's Coffee & Donuts Incorporated who later merged into Starbucks Corporation In 1984 Starbucks opened its first location outside of Seattle, Washington In 1997 they moved their corporate offices from Seattle to Austin, Texas They currently have over 160 stores worldwide including 10 locations in Kentucky .

Fort Thomas is a town in Lawrence County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 714 at the 2010 census. Fort Thomas is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Fort Thomas were French missionaries in 1692. The fort was built by Colonel James Wilkinson and Major General David Dixon in 1775 as a strong military post on the Cumberland River against British forces under George Rogers Clark. The fort served as a strategic location for many years, providing artillery support for American operations against the British and their Indian allies. In 1814, following Tecumseh's attack on Lexington, Fort Thomas was abandoned and its cannons were used to garrison nearby Fort Donelson until it was destroyed in 1815 during the Battle of Nicholasville. In 1861, after the US Civil War began, Union General John Balfour ordered General William Taney to reorganize Lawrence County and establish new townships within it with large areas of forest land available for reclamation. Taney choseFortThomas as one of these new townships; he named it after his ancestor Colonel James Wilkinson who had founded Wilkinson County in 1775. The first businesses opened here shortly after approval from the state government; however small-scale farming continued until about 1870 when larger farmsteads appeared along what is now Main Street In that year an elevator machine shop was established by J L Bacon & Bros which became one ofFortThomas' most influential businesses A sawmill operated here from about 1872 until 1906 Gilbert Machine Shop started up around 1830 making wagons parts etc before going out of business in 1886 . A blacksmith shop also operated from about 1830 until 1865 . By 1840 there were over 100 residents living here primarily farmers with a few craftsmen such as shoemakers and wagonmakers In 1870 there were only 10 residents living here but this increased to 30 by 1890 due to increased demand for goods imported into Kentucky through Louisville By 1910 there were over 400 people living here including 300 farmers with some 60 professionals , 80 laborers, 20 manufacturers and 10 servants
