TheFortThomas Army Garrison was established in 1817 and served as the home of the Kentucky Army National Guard from 1792 until it was disbanded in 1969. The garrison was located on the present-day campus of Fort Thomas, KY, which is also the site of the now defunct United States Military Academy. In 1865, Fort Thomas became the first military installation in Kentucky to be reconstructed after being destroyed by Union forces during the American Civil War. The reconstruction project included building a new fortification and enlarging existing barracks. In 1886, Fort Thomas became an armory and barracks training ground for soldiers of all branches of service. During World War II, Fort Thomas served as an ammunition storage depot for artillery units stationed throughout Tennessee and Kentucky. In 1945, Fort Thomas became home to Headquarters Third Infantry Division (later Headquarters Ninth Infantry Division) after its activation at nearby Camp Humphreys. From 1945 until its disbandment in 1969, Headquarters Third Infantry Division operated out of Fort Thomas while subordinate units were stationed in other installations around Louisville and Nashville. Today,FortThomasArmyGarrison remains a major tourist attraction within its community of alumni and friends who visit annually to enjoy its historical significance and vibrant atmosphere.
