In 1926 Mayor John Muhlenberg commissioned architect Jules L’Enfant to design what would come to be known as Florentine Park – later renamed Belleview Gardens after General Motors Corporation moved its headquarters from Detroit to Lexington in 1938 – which remains one of downtown Florence's major attractions today.
