Erlanger is a small town in Kentucky. It is located in the Central Appalachian Mountains, about 25 miles southwest of Louisville and 40 miles northwest of Lexington. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1834 by two brothers, George and Jesse Erlanger. It grew rapidly after it was chosen as the site for a new courthouse in 1841. In 1847, the town had 9 residents and became an incorporated village. In 1865, it became a separate city when it annexed the adjoining towns of Coolbaugh and Morehead City. In 1927, Erlanger annexed neighboringtowns of Morehead City and Coolbaugh to form its current city limits. The annexation made Erlanger one of the largest cities in Kentucky by population size. Erlanger has several significant industries including aluminum smelting and manufacturing tools, printing services, petroleum products, agricultural products such as hay and cotton seed production, and tourism. The city also has a large amount of cultural significance due to its history as one of the few places where timber was harvested during the early years of American involvement in World War II

Erlanger, Kentucky is a town in Hardin County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. The community was founded in 1824 by Captain John Erlanger and his family. The first settlement in what is now Erlanger was called "Cooksville." A post office called Cooksville was established in 1825, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1828, Captain John Erlanger purchased from James Caldwell a tract of land containing present-day Erlanger. He named the community after himself and some friends he had made during his visit to Scotland that year. Captain John Erlangler's descendants continued to live in the community until 1912 when they sold their holdings to George Witherspoon for $10 per acre ($). Witherspoon developed the properties into a small farming village which grew rapidly due to its location on an important road connecting Louisville with Nashville and other eastern settlements. By 1880 there were more than 100 people living hereabouts. By 1920 there were 431 residents living hereabouts; however, this number dropped below 200 by 1930 due to the Depression which destroyed much of rural America at that time. In 1950, following approval by the US Congress, Witherspoon donated all but one acre (0 plot) of his property to local government for development as a parkland area known as Hardin County Park—the only piece remaining being used as farmland today. This event helped revive hard-hitErlangerand give it new life; since then over 1 million people have visited this park!
The first settled area in what is now Erlanger, Kentucky was a small community on the banks of the Ohio River. The area that would become Erlanger was first land grants given to families by George Washington in 1792. In 1811, the town of Harlan was founded by settlers from Ohio and Indiana. The town became a stop on the road between Cincinnati and Louisville. In 1814, the city of Louisville was founded by James K. Polk and various other pioneers who had traveled through Harlan on their way to find new territory. The city grew rapidly, becoming an important commercial center during the 19th century. In 1825, John Marshall gave property east of present-day downtown to build schoolhouses for his students in what would become known as Marshalltown Township. These schools were used until 1889 when they were replaced with modern buildings that still stand today. In 1827, Thomas Neely donated land south of downtown to create what is now called Neelyville Township. This township would grow quickly and be renamed Erlanger in 1830 after JnoEmanuel Erlanger (1762-1848), one of its early settlers. In 1837, Elijah Bledsoe donated land north of downtown to create what is now known as Bledsoe Heights Park which contained a large public garden that still remains today. Today,Erlanger is home to many businesses and shops along with several churches including Stroudsburg United Methodist Church which dates back to 1876
