The first recorded purchase of coffee beans from Africa took place on October 1, 1798, when George Washington's army purchased two hundred pounds of Sudanese coffee from Ibrahim Sheik Mohammed ibn Ali al-Maktoum, ruler of Mecca. It wasn't until 1825 that European traders began purchasing coffeebeans directly from espresso plantations in Ethiopia and Yemen. By 1830, the British were selling three million pounds of Italian roast coffee each year while American merchants were importing an estimated five million pounds of Spanish roast coffee annually. In 1844, Colonel Charles Goodyear founded Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio with the goal of making tires using Certified Ethiopian and Guatemalan Arab Coffee beans. While Goodyear's early efforts produced high quality beans, it would not be until after World War II that domestic roasting companies would become prevalent throughout the Midwest and Northeast United States. It wasn't until 1865 that General James Kossuth's Hungarian cavalry invaded Hungary and encountered Ottoman Turkish forces near Buda Castle - conditions favored the Turks because they had more water supplies available than their opponents (the Austrians had fought hard against Ottoman forces). Withdrawing his troops under cover of darkness, Kossuth ordered his commanders to boil all their food before eating it; this decision led to what is known as 'Kossuth's Famine.' As a result of these events - which coincided with a major drought across much Hungary - many Hungarians migrated northward into Canada or America where they found opportunity and wealth beyond anything seen within their homeland since 1492. By 1870-72 Territorial Governor John Saylor established a tea plantation at present day Elizabethtown in order to produce both tea and coffee for sale throughout western Kentucky; during this time period also population growth occur primarily due to increase in coal production brought about by new transportation methods such as railroads and steamships along with increased trade opportunities opening up between east coast ports such as Baltimore/Washington Docks on the Potomac River and west coast ports such as San Francisco Bay Area. This may be because General Robert Ewing Lee was born in this community (of which Elizabethtown is one tiny piece) or because he died here while serving as general during World War II military operations against Japan south of what is now known as Lexington/Fayette County line (iowas then known as Kylesborough).
