Elizabethtown is a city in and the county seat of Elizabeth County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 12,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington–Fayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1786 by James Robertson and named for Princess Elizabeth, daughter of King George III of Great Britain. The first post office was established in 1812. In 1862, it became a town again when it absorbed the neighboring villages of Paintsville and Callender. Elizabethtown was founded in 1812 by Captain James Caldwell and his wife Elizabeth Ford. The Caldwells were Creek Native Americans who had come to Kentucky from Georgia. The first post office in Elizabethtown was established in 1824. In 1846, the town was renamed for General David Harrell Lincoln after he became the 12th President of the United States. The city's incorporation as a city occurred on December 3, 1907. In 1865, General Sherman's army invaded Kentucky and burned all of Elizabethtown except one house which still stands today as part of downtown Elizabethtown's Historic District.During World War II the munitions plant located in central Elizabethtown produced munitions for both sides of the conflict including strategic bombing raids against Germany that took place over several months starting in late 1943 until early 1944
Elizabethtown is a small town in central Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Elizabeth County. The first settlers in Elizabethtown were farmers who arrived in 1815. They were part of what was called the Transylvania Colony, which was established by James Kensey and other early pioneers to settle around what is now Elizabethtown. The farmsteads that remain today were started by John Pritchard and others in 1827, and continued to be run by families until the 1960s when they became part of the larger community of Elizabethtown-Leesburg. In 1821, Irish immigrants from County Clare came to America and set up a farm near present-day Elizabethtown. When American troops invaded Ireland during the Mexican–American War (1846-48), some of these men decided to stay behind and help rebuild the country after its destruction by war. Some of these men formed a group known as "The Irishmen" and began trading goods with Americans on their way back home from Mexico City. This group also erected a log cabin on what is now First Street inElizabethtown for themselves and their family members to live in while they awaited news about their compatriots back home in Ireland. In 1853, most of these men moved out west along I-65 intopresent day Morgan County when that area was opened up for settlement due to advances made by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during his Great Depression era presidency. After World War II ended, many companies left America – including General Motors – moving jobs overseas because there were no available workers here anymore once manufacturing had stopped being production centered around big farms across Pennsylvania and Ohio only 10 years earlier! However, businesses like McDonald’s kept coming back thanks to young people looking for an easy job with good pay! This has led not just to one but several busy intersections downtown where you can find dozens or sometimes hundreds of restaurants all open at once serving different types of food!
