The Marine Corps deployed gift history to Elizabethtown, Kentucky in 1917. The Commandant of Marines, Rear Admiral John J. Pershing, first organized the Marine Corps at Quantico, Virginia in 1915 and ordered the shipment of gifts to troops stationed in Europe. These gifts were typically items such as cigarettes or cigars. In 1918, the United States entered World War I and the Marine Corps was called into service. From 1919-1921, Marines shipped gift history to troops fighting in Korea and Vietnam. This deployments led to a variety of items being sent back including clothing, toys, books, and food products. In 1967-1968 during the Vietnam War when American forces were withdrawing from North Vietnam there was an increase in Gift History shipments arriving at Elizabethtown Naval Air Station. This represented a new era for Marines sending gift history as part of their support functions. Since 1987 when Gifts for Troops program began at Elizabethtown Naval Air Station we have donated over 350 different items that represent every branch of service within the Marine Corps including artillerymen, aviation mechanics/pilots/air controllers/and more!
The Marine Corps’ Deployed Gift program is a unique and appreciated way for Marines to show their support for our service. The program began in 2004 as part of the Marine Corps’ Thanks You initiative. Gift recipients include individuals from all walks of life – active duty members, their families, retirees and civilians who are affiliated with the Marine Corps through employment or other ties to the military community. Gifts range in price from $25 to $1,000. The Giving Pledge has played an important role in solidifying the relationship between Marines and those they serve by demonstrating that Marines will not rest until their nation is safe again. The Marines of the Elizabethtown Marine Barracks/ Depot were Deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on Dec. 7, 2009. The Marines arrived in Elizabethtown, KY on Dec. 12 and began their deployment by participating in a ceremonial event at the courthouse. They continued to participate in ceremonies and events throughout the month of December, including Christmas Day celebrations at the barracks and a public holiday parade through town.

Throughout their history, the marines have always put their own safety first and this has led them to be well-known for being some of the most decorated units in the military.

Elizabethtown was founded in 1792 by Captain John Sevier. The town was named for the Elizabeth River, which flows through the town. The first settler in Elizabethtown was James Hardin. Hardin and his family were the first to live in what is now Elizabethtown. In 1802, Captain John Sevier donated land to the town for a courthouse and jail. It was not until 1815 that a school was built in Elizabethtown. It was called the "School of Industry" because it taught skills such as farming, carpentry, weaving, and spinning cotton yarns. The towns growth slowed after 1800 because of economic reasons. However, it continued to grow during the late 19th century due to its location on a major railroad line and its close proximity to Louisville, Kentucky. In 1907, Elizabethtown became part of Jefferson County when it was formed from parts of three other counties. In 1927, Elizabethtown had its own newspaper called "The Herald". This paper lasted until 1973 when it merged with the weekly "Kyrona Messenger" to form one paper known today as "The Courier-Mail". On December 6th,, 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of The Courier-Mail being founded in Elizabethtown KY

The town grew rapidly after it was designated as a post office in 1824. In 1828, the first school was built in the town. By 1865, Elizabethtown had a population of 1,500 people and an economy that relied on agriculture and manufacturing. However, by the early 21st century, economic conditions in Elizabethtown had deteriorated due to globalization and increased competition from neighboring towns. In July 2016, the town voted to reduce its population to less than 1,000 people
