Gourmet Coffee, founded in Elizabethtown, Kentucky in 1906 by Harry J. Reich and his wife Alice, was one of the first coffee shops in the United States. Gourmet Coffee became a national chain, and its legacy continues to be felt today as one of the most prestigious coffee retailers in America. The history of gourmet coffee begins with Harry J. Reich and Alice Reich who opened Gourmet Coffee in 1906. The Rechts family had been brewing coffee for generations before that, and their recipe had always been special. In 1916, they opened their second store in Lexington, Kentucky which became known as The Ritz-Carlton Inn & Coffee House. In 1923 they moved to Louisville where they continued to operate until 1986 when they closed their doors forever at the age of 106 years old. Elizabethtown is a town in Clay County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The townsite was laid out in 1881 and named for Elizabeth Hardin, the daughter of a surveyor. It was incorporated as a city on November 3, 1907.
The coffee industry has a long and diverse history. The first coffee beans were grown in theatteries near Rome in the early 4th century BC. Coffee was mentioned in a Greek text in 399 BC. Roasting plants were established by the Arabs in the 12th century AD. Coffee beans from different parts of the world began to be roasted together, creating what is now called “gourmet” coffee. The Dutch introduced coffee to Europe in 1624. Coffee became more popular after it was discovered that it could be cultivated on plantations in Brazil and Java. In 1795, French traders founded a small colony at Saint Domingue where they started planting coffee trees. Coffee beans were shipped back and forth between France and Holland until 1810 when coffee became an official currency of Holland. The Dutch introduced bagasse (a type of ground bean) to make espresso while the French developed pour-over methods for making better espresso than using filters or leeches which interfered with flavor extraction. In 1876, Peter Krapf invented vacuum roasting techniques which allowed for greater quality control over beans during production than earlier methods such as brushing, exposure to air and seeding within days of origin). In 1912, Angelo Bonomi patented a process called “Cup-of-Gold” which created smooth cup-like grounds with slight variations in color from one roast to another (this method is still used today). Italian immigrants brought their love of Italian cuisine to America where they started growing coffee trees on large estates around 1910-1920 (known as plantation coffees). By 1930, about 60% of all black American market demand came from these plantations.(Kafka) Since World War II, gourmet coffees have been produced mainly by small artisanal roasters who are passionate about their product and adhere to strict guidelines regarding taste, aroma, texture and grind size(Bagasse vs Gold Medal vs Fine Grind)). The first recorded mention of coffee was in the book The Arabian Nights, written by Ibn Battuta. Arabic traders and travelers brought coffee back to Europe in the early 1600s. Coffee became popular in England after it was discovered by an artist named Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1692. In 1795, Italian explorers Giovanni da Verrazzano and Bartolomeu Dias found a possible source of new sea routes between India and Africa through the Middle East, which led to increased demand for coffee beans fromAfrica. Dutch traders also began supplying Ethiopian Jews with coffee beans in the late 1700s.
Elizabethtown was founded in 1785 by James K. Polk, successor to the British crown as United States president. The town became a major production center for Kentucky coal during the 19th century, and is now known for its historical landmarks and attractions. In 1801, Elizabethtown was incorporated as a city under the name of Louisville. The city's growth accelerated in the early 20th century, thanks to its status as a leading producer of coal and other minerals. In 1925, Elizabethtown became one of several U.S. towns designated as part of the National Historic District called "The Haymarket". Today, Elizabethtown is an important cultural and economic center in central Kentucky, with many restaurants and stores located along Main Street. It also has abundant historic resources including churches and schools dating back to the 1700s.
In the year 1802, a group of men from Elizabethtown, Kentucky founded a town on the banks of the Ohio River. The town was named for Governor George Rogers Clark and his wife, Elizabeth. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, and other vegetables. By 1810, the town had a population of about 25 people. In 1812, the U.S. government established an outpost at Fort Harrison in nearby West Point to protect American traders traveling along the Ohio River. In 1814, Congress passed an act authorizing President James K. Polk to establish a military post at Elizabethtown in order to defend against Indian raids. The post was named for General John Custer and his regiment known as the “Buffalo Soldiers” because they rode into battle wearing buffalo robes around their necks. The town continued to grow as businesses opened up and people started moving in from surrounding counties. By 1830,Elizabethtown had a population of 350 people and it became known as one of America’s most important trade towns because it housed more than 20 different businesses. Over time,Elizabethtown become known for its rich history and its many landmarks such as the Liberty Belltower and Main Street which still stand today
