Military gift history in Danville, Kentucky goes back to the Revolutionary War. The area now known as Danville was part of what is now Kentucky and was home to a small British garrison. In 1775, General George Washington sent a detachment of Mounted Infantry toDanville in order to protect local settlers from Indian attacks. One of the soldiers in this unit was Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Gist who later became president of Danville College. In 1802, General James K. Polk sent a detachment of artillerymen and cavalrymen to Danville in order to help suppress the Whiskey Rebellion. The town also saw some action during the Mexican-American War when General Crook's brigade arrived here for an attack on Pecos River Bridge. On September 29, 1862 Confederate Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked and destroyed the Union Brigade Headquarters at Fort Knox before withdrawing across the river into Arkansas. Although it lost many men, the fort held out until November 10th when it surrendered under terms negotiated by governor John Bell Hood with assurances that all its prisoners would be delivered back home within two weeks. This event is generally considered among the most significant military defeats suffered by Confederate forces in Kentucky since they had done much more damage than just destroying buildings and losing men while attacking small towns like Danville

Danville is a city in Kentucky, United States. The population was 21,890 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Kentucky after Lexington. Danville was founded on October 15, 1817 by Adam Smith and family from what is now West Virginia. The area that became Danville was settled by the Shawnee and Potomac Indian tribes during the 1830s. In 1836, John Ross founded a small town withinpresentday Danville called Greeneville because of his discovery of coal there. The town grew rapidly due to its location near both Congress Hill and Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River. By 1840, Greeneville had become one of the largest cities in Kentucky and had an estimated population of 20,000 people. In 1847, David Dixon decided to move his printing press from Louisville to Danville because he saw potential for growth there. Dixon's presses quickly became popular in southern Kentucky and soon brought new life to the downtown area of Danville. In 1850, Daniel Boone arrived in Danville with his family and began developing land around present-day downtown into what would become rural farmland surrounding present-day City Hall Park (now known as Monument Square). Although originally intended only as a summer home for Boone and his family, Dogwood Row—the subdivision that later became downtown—was developed primarily by him and others associated with his venture. During this time period many important events took place inDanville including: In 1861 when Confederate General Robert Ewell left Richmond for Vicksburg following Battle of Gettysburg (a pivotal battle which helped turn Confederate fortunes), Daniel Boone followed suit becoming one of just four white men living inVicksburg at that time; all other residents were slaves who did not own property inside Confederate territory After watching Union soldiers burn down part of theirown town rather than surrender at Appomattox Court House following Lieutenant Colonel James Longstreet's orders on April 9th 1865 (prior to Lee's surrender), Daniel Boone returned home to found portionsofhistown destroyed as well as all but two buildings insideDogwood Row having been looted by Union Soldiers prior to their departure

Danville is a small town in Kentucky, located on the Cumberland River. The community was founded by Revolutionary War veterans, and has been continuously inhabited since 1819. It is one of the few U.S. towns that still has a French-Canadian population. Danville was named for Daniel Webster, 2nd Viscount Dunmore, who served as U.S. ambassador to France from 1795 to 1800 and as Minister Plenipotentiary to Canada from 1801 to 1805. The first settler in what is now Danville was Pierre Dorion, who arrived in 1792 with his family from Quebec City. He built a cabin on the present day corner of 5th Street and Main Street. A year later, he married Margaret Boydell and moved into a larger cabin near the present day intersection of Main and 6th Streets; this became the nucleus of what would become Danville. In 1819, General James Wilkinson reached Danville after crossing the Cumberland River at Rafton Ferry; heading westward through central Kentucky on his way to join General Anthony Wayne in invading Tennessee]. After reaching Danville, Wilkinson spent several days riding around town before settling down at local tavern called The Mansion House (now known as The Fitzgerald Hotel). In subsequent years, other officers and soldiers visiting Danville stopped at The Mansion House for refreshments before continuing their journey northward or returning home late at night; this phenomenon is known today as "the Colonel's Ride." While General Wilkinson was staying in Danville, he met John Hogg (1775-1837), an Irishman who had settled in Louisville County two years earlier.* Hogg decided to move back east rather than fight against American independence during the Revolution; he returned to Ireland and started trading goods with Americans living along the Ohio River.* In 1821, Hogg established himself as one of Kentucky's leading merchants; over time he acquired many interests across eastern Kentucky including land nearpresentday Monroeville.* When news arrived early in 1830 that President Andrew Jackson would be running for re-election as president on a pro-slave platform*, Hogg made arrangements with some influential Democratic politicians* *Hogg played an important role in helping convince Jackson not to run against John Quincy Adams* *Following Jackson's inauguration as president on April 12th 1830*Hogg died suddenly while traveling between Louisville and Lexington†† nearly four months after his initial investment†‡‡ turned out well.* As a result of these events it can be said that John Hogg had an indirect impact on history – both good and bad – much like Elias Howe did for Daniel Webster*.
Danville was founded in 1798 by John Danforth. The town is named after General James Wilkinson who fought in the American Revolution. In 1821, Danville became a county seat of Campbell County.
