The Danville Marine Museum is one of the oldest and most significant marine museums in Kentucky. The museum has a collection of more than 2,000 items relating to the sea.
Danville is a town located in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. Danville was founded in 1824. The community of Danville was named for Daniel Vaughn, an early settler. In 1830, Elder John Denton opened the first store in Danville and served as its first Mayor. In 1861, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest invaded Kentucky and captured Danville. After the war ended, Danville began to grow rapidly and by 1870 had a population of 10,000 people. At that time it became one of the most important coal-producing communities in the country. During the late 1800s and early 1900s there were many factories and mills in Danville which created many jobs for locals. However, during World War II much of the industry closed down due to wartime production shortages; however some residents did manage to find new employment within the military or within defense contractor businesses. Today much of what used to be downtown is now a residential area with small businesses scattered throughout the neighborhood streetscape; while commercial buildings remain scattered throughout downtown areas such as Market Street and First Street North

Danville was founded in 1785 by Captain John Danforth. The town was named for Colonel Daniel Vaughan, who had been a part of the Kentucky militia that helped repel the French during the French and Indian War. In 1817, General James Hays established a military post here and called it Fort Hays. This fort served as a base of operations for his campaigns against Mexican settlers in Texas and New Mexico. The town grew rapidly after Fort Hays was abandoned in 1827. By 1830, Danville had a population of over 2,000 people. It became an important center for trade and commerce because of its location at the junction of several wagon roads. In 1835, Danville became the capital of Hardin County when it was divided from Grayson County. In 1840, Danville experienced one of the most destructive fires in its history when an arsonist set fire to many buildings near downtown. The blaze destroyed much property but did not cause any casualties. By 1850, Danville had reached its peak as a commercial center with over 20 businesses located on Market Street alone. However, by 1870s economic conditions had changed so drastically that many businesses withdrew from town and it began to decline again. In 1881, Danville merged with other nearby towns to form what is nowmemorial park known as Park City-Danville Historic District
Danville was founded in 1795 by James Caldwell and his wife, Margaret. The town grew rapidly during the 18th century, thanks to its fertile soil and strategic location on the Ohio River. In 1798, Caldwell sold his interest in the town to trustees who planned to improve it as a commercial center. The first courthouse was built in 1800, and Danville became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. The population of Danville increased from around 100 in 1800 to more than 2,000 by 1830. In 1827, Caldwell donated 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land east of the town for a public square and school district. Today, that area is home to downtown Danville and some other businesses.
