Residents voted to incorporate as a town on November 15, 1873. In 1960, Danville annexed part of neighboring Hazard to make up its population growth since then; however all residents still maintain their individual citizenship within Danville and are not subject to taxation by either municipality or state monies because they reside within their own personal voting boundaries within Barbour County political jurisdiction only (i.e., those outside city limits). According to the 2000 census data:Danville has a total area of , all land currently unincorporated except for 0 .4 square miles (1 km²) lying east-southeast of Main Street due north of US-Route 3W on Daniel Boone Road and east-northeast of I-64 just past exit 224A on I-65 North towards Lexington/Flaming Ledge; this includes all land between main street and Daniel Boone Road including any parcel south thereof which lies wholly or partly within Henderson Parish adjacent thereto but does not include any lot located eastwardly beyond highway entrance ramps onto I-65 North at Exit 227E on I-640 West). This would give it a total area equal to that now included within Henderson Parish borders - 4square miles (10 km²). This helped to spur development within the community and led to increased trade between local businesses and those located further away on either side of New Market Square
