Danville, Kentucky is a small town located in Johnson County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,269 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington metropolitan area. Danville was founded in 1828 as a remote post on the Cumberland River by David Wilkinson and his family. It became an important trading center for salt and other goods during the early 19th century. In 1859, Daniel Byrd purchased the town from Wilkinson and began to develop it into a thriving community centered around its cotton plantations and Methodist church. By 1900, Danville had also become an important center for education with several well-educated citizens residing in its community. In 1907, Danville was chartered as a city under Kentucky statehood. It quickly became one of the most significant cities in southern Kentucky due to its high population density and thriving economy. The city prospered until World War II when it suffered heavily from bombing raids by American forces during that conflict. After the war, however, Danville began to experience dramatic growth again as new businesses were brought intotown and new housing developments were built.
