The United States Air Force (USAF) is the branch of the Department of Defense, performing aerial warfare and air mobility operations. The region that would become Danville was first settled by American Indians in 1775. In 1801, the area became part of Louisville and was annexed by what is today Kentucky. The village of Danville began to grow up around this time, and in 1831, it incorporated as a city. In 1850, the town had 681 residents; by 1870 it had grown to 1,812 residents. In 1915-16, Danville experienced one of its most significant periods of growth when it became home to two large textile mills: The Delaware Mills and the Lillie Mae Mill. At these mills, danvilians manufactured everything from jeans to T-shirts and overalls. Even though these factories closed in the early 1990s and 2000s due to competition from automated looms (the technology then used at these mills), their impact on Danville's economy can still be seen today in the way that businesses have been able to survive with smaller inventories; for example, many local restaurants still use danvilian ingredients even if they don't sell products made at those mills. From 1951 until 2000 there was also an aluminum plant located in Danville which operated under various names including Alcoa USA (1951-2000), Peco Aluminum (1975-2001) and JBS Technologies Incorporated (2002). This plant produced aluminum cans which were marketed throughout Eastern Kentucky and parts of Southern Indiana before being replaced by more automated processes beginning in 2002 by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) who continued manufacturing aluminum cans until they ceased operations during 2008 because of pollution concerns brought about from their production process
