Campbellsville is a town in Campbell County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Louisville metropolitan area. The first military post in Campbellsville was Fort Donelson, which opened in 1802. The fort served as an escort for President James K. Polk during his trip to Kentucky in 1846. In 1861, Union General Richard M. Ewell invaded Kentucky and captured all but two of the state's Confederate capital cities: Lexington and Louisville (the remaining city surrendered on April 12). This caused much jubilation throughout the Confederacy and helped to inspire many Confederates to join the army against their own government. On November 15, 1862, Confederate General Robert Easley attacked Union forces at Missionary Ridge near Campbellsville; this engagement resulted in one of the bloodiest battles of the war overall. In 1863, Union General Ulysses S. Grant captured Lexington after a three-day battle that saw over 50 kills and 300 wounded troops from both sides combined... This event also demonstrated how important it was for Confederate commanders to have an efficient cavalry commander who could control large areas surrounding their capitals like Lexington and Louisville while still able to fight effectively on the battlefield - something that Grant would later thrive on when he took command of Army of Northern Virginia under Robert Ewell."
Campbellsville is an unincorporated community in Campbell County, Kentucky, United States. It is located on the Cumberland River at its confluence with the Ohio River. The population was 2,826 at the 2010 census. The town was named for General John Campbell, a Revolutionary War general and founder of Campbelltown in West Virginia. In 1802, John J. Kline founded the first gristmill in Campbellsville; it still flourishes and produces flour for local markets. In 1865, General James Hinton established a school here to provide education for white children of color who were then being brought up by their African American parents in poverty near Louisville. The first black teacher in Kentucky taught here; she later became known as Mrs. Johnson and served until her death in 1922. As coal miningobilization increased throughout Appalachia during the late 19th century and early 20th century, many small communities sprang up around anthracite coal mines across western Kentucky and eastern Tennessee; among these were Campbellsville. By 1920, there were more than 30 schools serving students from all over Appalachian Kentucky; nearly all of them operated thanks to gifts or donations from mine owners or friends of Mine Owners' Society members like General Hinton himself (the society had been created just two years earlier). During World War II, heavy industry such as munitions plants mushroomed throughout western Kentucky due to wartime production shortages;Campbellsville was one of several small towns that experienced significant growth as a resultof military construction efforts along the Cumberland River valley between 1943 and 1945. After war ended, vast new housing developments replaced most of the older mills and mines closed down across much of western Kentucky— leaving many small towns struggling economically even after decades of economic decline; but Campbellsville continued to thrive thanks to both its natural resources (coal and water) as well as its strong community spirit which helped keep people employed during tough times.
