The first people to live in Campbellsville were the Toland family who came from Ireland in 1810. They built a cabin on Cabin Creek near present-day Campbellsville. In 1812, Captain John Toland and his family founded what would become the Toland Manufacturing Company which manufactured flour, meal and other products until it merged with several others into General Mills in 1920. In 1865, John A. Campbell arrived from Lewisburg, Pennsylvania and started a grocery store at Seventh Street and Broadway Avenue known as "the Old Store". He continued to run the store until his death in 1906. His son John H. Campbell took over ownership of the business after his father's death and operated it until 1924 when it was sold to J Edgar Thomson Co., Ltd., a British dry goods company that became Macy's Department Stores Incorporated (Macy's). John H. Campbell was also an attorney and judge for many years before he died in 1984 at the age of 92 years old; he had been mayor of Campbellsville since 1923 when he succeeded his father as manager of the store. His grandson William Fenton Campbell ran this business from 1984 until its sale to Belk Companies LLC in 2013 . The current owner is Belk Companies LLC which operates both stores under one roof throughout their entire operation - one main entrance leading into both stores with large displays of clothing items along one wing while electronics are found on another wing parallel to this main entrance/exit corridor

In 1851, the government of Kentucky was divided into two parts, and Campbellsville became part of the new Louisville County. By 1870, the population of Campbellsville had reached 4,500 people. The post office at Campbellsville continued to be open until 1959.
