Fresh roasted coffee is a centuries old tradition in Berea, Kentucky. The first coffee beans were ground and roasted on the family farm in 1872. Coffee was first brewed from this soil by my grandfather, Mr. Tomlinson, in 1922. Today, fresh roasted coffee is an important part of the Berea community and culture. Since its inception, Berea's fresh roasted coffee has been hand-selected and Roasted to perfection with love. Our coffees are processed using only the best beans from our local farmers markets and roasters in Kentucky. We partner with several local businesses to help support our small town economy while providing delicious cup of java that comes straight to your doorstep!
Fresh roasted coffee beans are a prized commodity, and they come from high-quality coffee plants. The beans must be picked before the flowers have finished blooming, and then they must be dried in the sun or in an oven. Once the beans are dry, they are ground into a fine powder. Fresh roasted coffee is usually enjoyed within two days after it is roasted.
The Berea Coffee Company was founded in 1892 by George W. Berea and his brothers, Jacob and Nicholas. The company grew quickly and soon had a shipment of coffee beans arrive at the Kentucky port of New Orleans. In 1906, the company became one of the first to sign a cooperative agreement with National Coffee Association.
Berea is a town in Pike County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. Berea is home to the Berea Academy and Berea College. The first few settlers of what is now Berea were families of Swiss immigrants who moved to the area in 1810. In 1811, John Nolen established a log cabin on the current site of downtown Berea. He named it "Nolen's Grove" after his father-in-law, Nicholas Nolen (1772–1851). In 1816, James Fenton founded the settlement of Fentonville on land he had acquired from Nicholas Nolen. His family later moved to Berea and continued to live there until their death in 1865. In 1830, David Cowan purchased 640 acres of land east of present day downtown Berea from Nicholas Nolen for $5 per acre ($40 worth of goods and services at that time). The Cowan family lived there until 1861 when they sold the land back to David Cowan's son-in-law Samuel Pemberton for $7 per acre ($60 worth of goods and services at that time). Samuel Pemberton built a small house on this property which he called "Pemberton's Hill". It still stands today as part of downtown Berea. The first post office in Bereau opened in 1836 with Wm Averill as its first clerk. The building still stands today as part of downtown Bereau. In 1840, William Hinton established a gristmill west side of present day city limits which he called "Hinton's Mill". It has also been known as either "Powell's Mill" or simply "Mill Pond". It was destroyed by fire in 1903 but was rebuilt and renamed "Hinton Mill", again becoming known as just "Mill Pond". This mill continued operating until it closed down in 1978 due to lack of demand from customers during the Great Depression years. It has since been restored and currently operates as an event center located inside the old mill buildings next door to Powell’s restaurant which used to be located inside City Limits Park before moving out into its own park adjacent to FirstEnergy Stadium approximately 10 years ago! In honor both mills we have also started construction on another replica mill pond/gristmill near downtown that will hopefully be completed by late 2018 or early 2019! founder/president emeritus Willie Horton donated funds towards this project so look forward to seeing it finished soon!
