Coffee has been enjoyed by humans for over 2,500 years. The first coffeehouses were opened in the Netherlands in 1665 and soon after, coffee became a popular commodity throughout Europe. In 1795, Englishman John Fenton started the first coffee mill in Berea, Kentucky. He named his mill Coffee House because of its importance as a place where he could sell his beans to other businessmen and travelers. In 1827, two Swiss immigrants invented the french press – an early form of coffee maker that made it easier to drink espresso without having to use boiling water. French press machines quickly became popular around the world and helped make coffee one of the most popular drinks ever created. By 1830, more than 1,000 coffeehouses had been opened in England and America. Coffee began being exported to new countries such as Australia and Brazil during this time period. In 1850, Dutchmen Hendrik Van Rensselaer and Diederik Janssen founded what is now known as Java Coffee Company in Jakarta, Indonesia – one of the earliest international coffee companies. Java Coffee was an early pioneer in developing modern brewing methods for espresso which later helped spread this type of beverage throughout Southeast Asia. By 1870, more than 20 million cups of java had been brewed all over the world! The popularity of caffeine-based beverages continued to grow throughout the 19th century until World War II when they slowly disappeared from society altogether due to regulations governing their production and consumption

Starting in 1893 several Dutch companies started selling their own brand names for ground coffee such as Kamenetz (Kamenz), Java (Javanese), Berendt (Berendt) and Oudolfs (Oudolf). The roasting process that produces light roast coffees is called “baking” or “roasting” because it occurs over a careful heat treatment that caramelizes the bean proteins to create a rich flavor profile with some notes of burnt sugar or caramelization points. Roasted coffees are distinguished by their color which can range from light to dark brown or black; their size; and how smooth they are Feathering is also considered part of the roasting process where air is blown around the bean so that it becomes evenly coated with flour

Berea, Kentucky is a small town in Pike County, Kentucky. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Berea is part of the Lexington metropolitan area. The first people to settle in what is now Berea were the Shawnees and Potawatomi from Illinois. A post office was established at Berea on March 8, 1841, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town was named for General James K. Beal who fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln made an appearance at a local fairgrounds when he stopped by on his way to visit Harpers Ferry as part of his continued effort to gain support for the Union cause during the American Civil War. In 1870, a flour mill and gristmill were built within walking distance of each other in what is now Berea. The mills produced flour for local markets and also exported flour to Louisville and NashvilleTN., among other places In 1881, pioneer John Prentice founded Mayflower Brewery which continues today as one of Kentucky's leading breweries In 1912, a hospital (the First Baptist Hospital) opened its doors in what is now downtown Berea In 1922/23, under Mayor John Fenton Anthony (1922-1925), construction began on The University of Kentucky’s new Medical School Building which would become one of the most important buildings in downtown Berea On October 6th 1946 representative from India Mr Kirti Menon paid Visitor’s Fee to KY’s Agricultural College at Berea RBI Governor Dr AS Dattatreya visited KY Agricultural College on November 5th 1946 with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru On this occasion presence of Chairman Bihar State Bank Ltd Managing Director Mrs Sripada Menon & Vice Chairman M/s Indusbank Limited etc stirred remembrances by present day students
Berea was founded by John Berea in 1786. It was originally called "Fayetteville." The town was renamed to Berea in 1811 and again to Berea in 1827. In 1865, it became the seat of Kentucky County.
