Bardstown, Kentucky is a small town located in the heart of Eastern Kentucky. It was founded in 1785 by Captain Bard and his wife, Polly. The Bardstown Plantation was one of the largest and most successful slave-based plantations in the region. The plantation was sold to John Blair in 1802. Blair became a figurehead for antislavery activity in Kentucky. He helped to found the Anti-Slavery Society of America and authored an influential pamphlet against slavery. In 1865, after the American Civil War ended, Blair died at age ninety-eight from natural causes. His estate passed to his daughter Lucy Blair, who took over management of the plantation until her death in 1896. After her death, it passed through several hands before being acquired by George W. Dickenson in 1912. Dickenson made it a research center for white historians and operated it as a museum until its sale to the University of Louisville in 1951. The town of Bardstown has grown rapidly since its founding and now occupies a significant area within Eastern Kentucky's central region. The population peaked at around 25,000 during World War II but has declined slightly since then; however, recent growth has been largely due to increased tourism opportunities associated with nearby famous attractions such as Mountaineering activities at nearby Knob Hill National Park or Lexington Heritage Festival events which take place throughout the year. Bardstown, Kentucky was founded on December 17, 1786, by Colonel James Robertson. The town was named after Bardstown County in southern Virginia. The first permanent settler in the area was William Byrd. In 1815, Bardstown became a county seat and was renamed Randolph County after one of its pioneer settlers. In 1861, Kentucky seceded from the United States and formed its own country called Confederate Kentucky. Many people in Bardstown sided with the Confederacy because they were ownership farmers who felt their land had been taken away from them during the American Revolution. After the war ended, many of these farmers returned to their original residences in Randolph County and began to rebuild their homes and businesses. The city of Bardstown officially became a municipality on May 1, 1912. On November 1, 1926, it adopted an ordinance changing its name to Bardstown proper. As part of this change, the city limits were extended southward to include portions of McConnellsburg and Parkville counties as well as most of Hardin County east of Route 66). In 1941, Congress passed the National Defense Act which changed federal law regarding military recruitment in central KY; henceforth all men over 21 must be registered with local militia companies before being drafted into service
