Bardstown is a town in Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. It is the home of the University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball team and other popular tourist attractions. The history of Bardstown goes back to 1792 when Captain John Clements established a small trading post on the Harrods Creek in what is now Bardstown. The post served as a stop on Colonel James Wilkinson's march from Louisville to Lexington in 1795. In 1801, Captain George Rogers Clark passed through Bardstown on his way from Nashville to Lexington and made an observation about the beauty of the area that has come to be known as "The White Mountains." This led to development of Bardstown as a small hamlet with several contributing stores and homes until 1810 when it became part of Jefferson County. By that time, many people had already moved into the town due to its strategic location and easy access to transportation including Stagecoaches running between Louisville and Lexington daily. For many years, Bardstown was considered one of the most beautiful places in all of Kentucky because it boasted such features as well-manicured gardens, richly carved log buildings dating back centuries, rolling hills full of timberlands for agriculture, and numerous churches built by Presbyterians and Baptists which remain standing today. In 1821, General Andrew Jackson visited Jefferson County during his campaign for president and discovered that much development had taken place since he last passed through there two years earlier but he found little interest among those living there due largely to lack thereof being prompted by industry or commerce rather than natural resources or agricultural potential which were more pressing at that time. As Jackson continued his journey southward throughout Jefferson County he noted this same deficiency especially in areas such as Bardstown where economic opportunity seemed nonexistent while industry grew rapidly elsewhere despite little encouragement from either political leaders or citizens themselves who saw only value in expanding western settlements while they stagnated within their own borders.
