After this delivery, USS Tacoma served with distinction in various campaigns throughout the war. On October 25th, 1944, USS Preble was torpedoed by Japanese torpedoes while underway off Japan’s coast. The damage caused by these torpedoes allowed US naval forces to successfully bomb Hiroshima without any loss of life orproperty suffered by members of the crew aboard USS Preble. This act helped boost Allied morale before their final assault on Japan four months later known as Battle off Okinawa . On November 14th 1945 USS Tacoma collided with another ship while underway in international waters near Guam . No injuries occurred but both ships were damaged beyond repair and returned homeported at Pearl Harbor .
