The United States Coast Guard was established in 1790 as a voluntary militia organization to protect the coastline of the newly formed America. The first coast guard station was located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and was used for only a few months. It was not until 1807 that the first permanent coast guard station was built in Ashland, Kentucky. This station became known as anchor point West. The Coast Guard played an important role in keeping our country's security and helped prevent numerous maritime disasters including the sinking of USS Maine in 1915 and the grounding of SS Oceanic off Cape Cod in 1937. Today, the Coast Guard provides coastal defense, search and rescue, marine science research, education and outreach programs across our nation. In addition to its Serving Our Community Program which helps children learn about life on land and sea through hands-on activities with NOAA's National Weather Service; traditional gifts such as fishing poles or shells are also popular gifts among members of the Coast Guard community.

Ashland, Kentucky is a small town located in the U.S. state of Kentucky, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Lexington and 15 miles (24 km) south of Louisville. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,828. The name "Ashland" originates from a Shawnee chief named Ashawamichi meaning "place wherehike." The first people to live in what is now Ashland were the Shawnee. The town was founded by Elijah Hicks in 1814 as a trading post on the Ohio River between Henderson County and Putnam County. In 1818, John Stephenson founded nearby Clintonville and moved his family to Ashland in 1825. In 1830–31, General James Hays's raid through eastern Kentucky destroyed much of what was left of the Shawnee Nation and threw many displaced tribe members into poverty at Asheboro on the Ohio River near present-day Louisville; many decided to migrate westward rather than risk being annihilated or driven out again by hostile Native Americans. This influx of refugees increased economic development around Asheboro because river transportation became available for goods brought upriver from other parts of Kentucky and Virginia. On July 17, 1861 – three days after Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter – Union General Nathan Bedford Forrest burned down Asheboro with artillery fire while farmers were away at their crops – an event which has been described as one of history's most destructive raids against civilian populations (). At that time few residents had any knowledge about military engagements taking place just outside their towns; when word came back that there had been local destruction, most likely caused by Confederates themselves (), inhabitants began gathering information before they could be affected (). The first store opened in Ashley Falls Parish on December 12, 1861 (); it was operated by Wm JONES & Bros., who also built Point Park Dam upstream from town beginning February 1st 1862 (). The United States Coast Guard was established in 1790 as the First State Militia. The Coast Guard became an independent branch of the U.S. government on December 15, 1821 when President James K. Polk signed a bill creating it. The first coast guard gift was given to Captain John Rodgers by the governor of Massachusetts on October 10, 1790. Captain John Rodgers was given a small silver cannon and three rifles for his service as the first captain of the new United States Coast Guard. In its early years, the Coast Guard relied heavily on donation from private individuals and organizations in order to maintain its existence and operate effectively. This is especially true during World War II when donations from citizens totaled over $5 million dollars! Since its inception, the Coast Guard has enjoyed numerous honors, including being named one of “America’s Bravest” by Time magazine in 1984 and being designated a “global leader” by UNESCO in 2006. In honor of their contributions to our Nation and world, many people across America have donated money or items to help support the Coast Guards missionfield around the globe!

Ashland, Kentucky is a town in Morehead County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 9,813 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Morehead County. The history of Ashland goes back to 1825 when it was founded as a small community on the eastern edge of what is now Morehead County by Methodist missionaries and settlers from Scotland. The town was first called "Athol" after Athol Fugate, an early settler in the area. In 1829, the name changed to Ashland in honor of General Andrew Jackson's wife, Ashley Leigh Jameson Jackson (1792-1866). As more people moved into the area, they began calling their new community by their original namesakes or shortened forms such as "Ashville", "Athens", and finally just "Ashland". By 1830, most residents were Scots-Irish immigrants who had come to work on plantations in Alabama and Georgia. In 1837, Ashland became a village under the jurisdiction of Campbellsboro Township. On July 1, 1840ła charter was granted for Ashland which stated that: “the said Village shall have perpetual succession from its founder”; however this charter was revoked by order of Presiding Bishop John Carroll on November 15th 1840 due to lack of funds raised for its maintenance. Additionally on May 25th 1845 there was another revocation involving some former members of ashLAND who had petitioned Presiding Bishop Carroll seeking approval to change their name back to Athens because they felt that their old home city would no longer be able to support them financially with its current economic conditions In 1853/4 Captain John Fenton purchased land east side Main Street between KY Route 6 and US Route 41 which formed what is now downtown Ashland; this purchase added 2 blocks (now Fourth Street) north of where present day First Avenue crosses US Highway 61 . This addition made downtown Ashland comprising all or part of 3 separate townships: Campbellsboro Township (northwest corner), East Central Township (northeast corner), and Downtown Ashton Township (southwest corner). On October 8th 1861 during Confederate emergency measures called for by Nathan Bedford Forrest following his seizure of power in Jefferson Davis' government following his successful raid on Fort Sumter Lieutenant Colonel George Aiken organized a civilian militia company known as Company K from among local men volunteering for service under Lt Col Aiken with orders not to resist if necessary but instead provide light artillery support against any possible Union attack should they occur while also seeking revenge against those responsible for Fort Sumter falling short two years earlier when Confederate forces successfully defended it despite heavy losses inflicted upon them including Captains Alexander Stephens and Robert Ewell Hickson) during what later became known as Slaughter Day events downtown Ashelanders responded militarily defending themselves with shotguns while Lt Col Aiken rode into town on horseback ordering them not fire until ordered otherwise he would order them to open fire himself – an event that has been chronicled variously through history books as either an example illustrating period discipline or an indication that local self-reliance had increased since then – continuing up 4th street until halted by Federal troops outside today's Courthouse square today just south east along 4th street from present day First Avenue across KY Route 61 . Ashland was founded in 1827 by James Caldwell. The town developed around a small sawmill, which produced lumber for local buildings and businesses. By the mid-19th century, Ashland had become an important center for trade and industry in eastern Kentucky. The mill closed in the early 20th century, but the town continued to grow and prosper until World War II when it became a target of bombing raids by the United States military. In 1951, Ashland was incorporated as a city. Today, the city is home to a number of industry and commercial establishments as well as public housing developments.
