In 1904, the name of the town was changed from Luton to Winfield after General James A. Winfield, who fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as military governor of Kansas. In 1924, a dam was built on the White River to provide irrigation water for nearby Lawrence City and other towns and villages in Logan County. The dam also helped turn Winfield into a boomtown during World War II because it gave rise to a new industry: manufacturing munitions for the war effort. By 1945, however, most of this production had ended due to depletion of oil sources and competition from other wartime industries around the country. Today, Winfield retains its unique character with its small-town feel but is also home to many businesses that continue to thrive thanks to their location within easy reach of Wichita."
