The National Guard of Winfield, Kansas was organized on December 15, 1861. The first national guard unit to be mobilized in the state of Kansas was Company Z of the First Regiment Kansas Volunteer Infantry. This regiment was mustered into service on January 6, 1862 and Companies A, B, and C were mobilization by September 15th. On October 5th Captain John W. Smith commanding Company D of the 1st Regiment Kansas Volunteer Infantry ordered his men to assemble at the old county courthouse in town for muster out. On November 3rd this brigade marched from their encampment south of Topeka to points northward where they engaged in skirmishes with Confederate forces under General JF Sumter until relieved by General Grant’s army on November 10th In 1863 Major General George Halleck authorized a 2nd Brigade under Brigadier General Nathaniel Prentiss to be organized in Winfield County for military duty within that year only On February 9th 1864 this brigade rendezvoused with Majors General Ulysses S. Grant’s armies at Pittsburg Landing near Memphis Tennessee and participated in the battle there which resulted in Union victory After the war ended these brigades disbanded but reorganized as part of Army of Missouri In 1865 these brigades were consolidated into one brigade under Lieutenant Colonel James Fenton who served until he resigned on May 12, 1865 due to illness The 1st Regiment Kansas Volunteer Infantry still exists today as a unit providing support for local police departments throughout western KS

Winfield is a small town in east Kansas, United States. The population was 1,573 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dodge City, Kansas metropolitan area. The Winfield town site was first settled in 1855 by Quakers from nearby Oskaloosa. In 1860, Winfield became the seat of Dodge City County and the post office was established there. The first store in Winfield opened in 1865. A cotton gin and other mills were built around 1870 in what is now downtown Winfield. In 1907, following Oklahoma's admission to the Union as a new state, Wichita Heights Cemetery opened on Main Street in Winfield to serve residents of that city as well as residents of neighboring townships including Hutchinson and Overtonville who had been buried there before Wichita Heights became open to all citizens. The cemetery continues to serve this purpose today. In 1927, three-quarters of the way through its construction project for adding a bypass around Wichita Falls (now Wichita), US Highway 69/US Highway 287 cross-country road was rerouted south onto present day Main Street between Winchester and Overtonville so that traffic could proceed directly from those cities into Dodge City instead of having to go through Wichita Falls first. This project was called "The Great Rebuild" because it replaced many old local roads with new ones and improved public transportation within Dodge City while also creating new jobs throughout the town center; it ultimately resulted in more than 4,000 construction jobs being created in Winfield during its five years of operation
