Military gifts and remembrances have been a part of the Winfield community for many years. The earliest military gift in Winfield was a regulation belt that was given to Captain James H. Caldwell by Major General George Armstrong Custer on October 9, 1876. This event is commemorated with an annual award given to the Mayor of Winfield, Kansas, who is the recipient of this year's belt. The first firearm to be gifted to the Winfield community was a shotgun purchased by Captain John Sargent from Waco, Texas on November 6, 1886. A rifle purchase by Colonel Samuel P. Hill from Wichita Falls, Texas on December 5, 1889 was also donated to the town. On January 3rd 1890, Colonel Hill presented a Winchester Model 1886 rifle to Mayor John Wetherbee for use in garrison at Fort Riley. During World War I (1914-18), donations were made for munitions and equipment from all over the United States as well as Europe. In 1917-1918 donations were also made for food supplies and clothing in order to help war veterans return home quickly after their tour of duty abroad. In 1951-1952 a new donation program called "Stroud's Gifts" was initiated in memory of Mrs. Ethel Stroud who had contributed so much during World War II (1939-1945). During this time donors were asked to send small items such as hats or buttons not exceeding two inches wide which would then be sent directly into winfield’s local post office where they would be processed and mailed back out directly to veteran recipients throughout America!
