Kansas' participation in the Civil War lasted from April 12th until May 7th when Union troops surrendered at Fort Donelson northwest of Nashville Tennessee (Erickson). While most people within Winfield took up arms against their own government they did so without knowing it at this point in time; there was no printed newspaper or other means for them to know what was happening outside their community (Fowler). Winfield is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. Winfield was named for General Winfield Scott. The first people to live in what is now Winfield were the Wichita Sioux Tribe. In 1867, James Wahlgren and his family arrived from Illinois and founded what is now Wichita. They platted the area around present-day Winfield and built a trading post there. A few years later, they also built a small school on the site that served as their home until 1870 when they moved to Topeka. In 1874, Jens Olsen established an inn in Winfield which became known as the Hotel Oleander. In 1896, George Condon constructed a good hotel near the current Walmart Supercenter just east of Main Street. That same year, he also platted what is now North High School and built it on land that had been donated by William Flanders. In 1907, Harry Haughey purchased 1/4 mile (1 km) of land north of present-day North High School from John Wexler for $2 per acre (0·86 hectares). He began developing this land into what is now North Central High School with help from fellow farmer George Condon. The first building on this property was dedicated in 1909 when North Central opened its doors to students who then walked or took public transportation toclasses across Sedgwick County. Over time, other buildings were added including two large gymnasiums and several science labs which are still used today by Sedgwick County students!North Central has been central to Sedgwick County education since its inception! Today it continues to serve as an important resource for both rural residents and suburbanites alike! Today’s economy in Winfield depends largely upon agriculture – providing jobs for locals and employs many others throughout Sedgwick County each day! Winfield was a small town in Manhattan County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. Winfield is located on the east side of the Missouri River. The first settler in Winfield was George Butterworth, who came from Windsor, Ontario in 1847. He and his family built a log cabin about two miles northeast of present day Winfield on the north bank of the Missouri River. From this cabin, Butterworth developed a 300 acre (120 ha) farm that included wheat and corn crops. In 1851 he purchased an additional 50 acres (20 ha) of land northeast of Winfield from John Goodrich and began to grow tobacco. In 1857-58 Captain Edward Elder led a brigade of Union soldiers into Kansas to suppressa slave insurrection near Topeka; during their stay inWinfield they erected several stores and taverns for troops which continued until 1861 when they withdrew back to Missouri. butterworth died in 1865 at age 83 years old while still living on his farm; he is buried there with many other early settlers in what is now known as Pioneer Cemetery
Winfield was founded in 1854 by Willis Winfield and James Ewing. The town grew rapidly and soon had a post office, school, Tavern, and other businesses. In 1876, the town became the county seat of Winfield County.
