Winfield was a small town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,604 at the 2000 census. It is now part of Independence, Missouri. Winfield was founded byodus settlers in 1854. The first post office in Winfield was established in 1855, and it served until 1861. In 1866, the town incorporated as a village. The first mayor of Winfield was A.W. Poston. In 1907, a portion of Winfield east of US-6 became the townsite of Independence when that section of Shawnee County was transferred from Shawnee to Independence Township. The oldest business in Winfield is the fodder store which opened on December 7, 1865 by John Wirths and his son-in-law Sam Hargrave Jr.. It continued to be operated until it burned down on July 14th, 1902; however the store remained standing until 1903 when it was replaced by the current building which still stands today (actually built 1922).
