The first coffee house in Winfield was opened by a Mr. and Mrs. Reeder on Elm Street in 1825. Over time, many other businesses followed suit and the population of Winfield began to grow rapidly with the arrival of new settlers. By 1860, there were over 100 businesses operating in Winfield.
Winfield is a small town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,879 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Winfield was founded in 1859 by Joel Peake and others who came from Gloucester, England. In 1861, it became the site of the first school in Sedgwick County. Winfield incorporated as a town on November 3, 1865. The community had a population of 266 when it lost its charter to become an city on December 14, 1967. The Winfield Refinery was built in 1921 and produces gasoline and kerosene for local use and export. The refinery closed in 2002 but there are still some reminders of its past including the reconstructed Wallace Engine House which housed the refineries' engine crews until they were replaced by more modern facilities in the early 1990s. In addition to its role as an important economic center for Sedgwick County during its early years, Winfield also played a significant role military presence during World War II with both the USAAF's Wichita Army Air Field (now Wright-Patterson AFB) east of town and then Fort Riley National Military Park just north of town being home to many aircraft companies such as Boeing Aircraft Corporation and Douglas Aircraft Company that manufactured bombers for America's war effort. These days there are only a few remnants from those wartime days remaining such as a dirt road leading from Interstate 35 towards Fort Riley that runs through downtown Winfield before ending at another dirt road near where I-35 meets Route 66A; this final remnant points out one former runway used by both these airports now filled with trees Today much of what once made up Winfield so significant has been replaced either by other towns within Sedgwic county or Wichita City proper but there are still many reminders located hereabouts including: 1) The original winFIELD refinery building which still stands today despite being demolished multiple times over time 2) A number of army barracks which have been converted into homes over time 3) A small park located between I-35W & I-35E called "Winston Park" which features several baseball diamonds/pitch cages as well as picnic tables & grills4) One street named after General Robert Ewing which runs along I-35W just south of downtownWinfeld5) Another street named after General James Forrest running parallel to I-435S just south of downtownWinfeld6) An old post office building currently used for storage orginal structures7) A collectionof WWI era machine guns & artillery pieces resting atop an old coal mine

Winfield was first settled in 1854 by a party of pioneers led by George Armstrong Custer. The town was named for General Winfield Scott, who had been instrumental in the U.S. conquest of Mexico. The post office was established at Winfield in 1855, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The community grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s, thanks to the opening of new railroads and the discovery of coal resources nearby. By 1881, Winfield had a population of over 1,200 residents. In 1895, Winfield became an incorporated city with a population of 5,000 people. During World War II, Winfield played an important role as one of the largest concentration camps for Japanese Americans located within Kansas City limits. More than 120,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated here during World War II.
