Winfield was a small town in Kansas, located about 20 miles west of Topeka. The town was established in 1881 by brothers Cyrus and Jacob Winfield. It post office operated from 1881 to 1883. In 1903, the name of the town was changed to Winfield, Kansas after the first mayor, A.B. Winfield, who served from 1902 to 1904. Winfield had two schools: one public and one private. The private school closed in 1912; however, the public school continued until 1938 when it also closed because of budget cuts by the state government. In 1915, there were only nine residents in Winfield; however, by 1930 there were over 500 people living in Winfield with a total population of 1,500. The primary industry inWinfield during its early years was agriculture; however, due to World War II and the baby boomers coming of age during that time period (1940-1960), wineries began to dominate local wine production as well as other agricultural products such as corn and beans.
