The Army moved to Winfield, Kansas in 1867. The town was founded by the United States government as Fort Leavenworth. It was renamed Winfield in 1865 in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant, the hero of the Civil War. The first military post in Winfield was a small fort built on the east side of town near present-day Interstate 70. In 1868, General Andrew Johnson ordered the creation of a new army post at this site, which became known as Ft. Riley (now part of Wichita). Winfield's growth as an infantry and cavalry garrison continued during World War I and II, with additions to the air force (1939), navy (1946), and marines (1970) among other units. By 1985, when it closed its doors for good after more than 120 years as an army post, Winfield had a population of just over 1000 residents and served as headquarters for many different commands within the military branches; it is still used today by Army Research Laboratory Headquarters. Today’s visitors can see evidence of winfield’s military history all around town – from Soldiers Monument on Main Street to Soldier’s Rest Cemetery on Elm Street – but one particular area that stands out is Ft. Riley Park where soldiers are buried dating back to 1868 right up until World War II! Winfield is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Winfield was founded in 1867 by General John A. Maynard and his family as a military post on the banks of the Arkansas River.Maynard named Winfield after his home state of Virginia. The present-day town was laid out in 1868 by incorporation of land grants from three different families: Maynard's from Virginia, Purdy's from Ohio, and Waddell's from Indiana. The first store opened in 1870 and the first hotel in 1871. In 1880, Winfield became a county seat and remained so until 1907 when it merged with Hutchinson to form Wichita). In 1902, Wichita City formed within Hutchinson Township when that township was divided into two parts along the line of railroad tracks running through town center between east and west streets (the east side being annexed to Wichita while the west side continued to be part of Hutchinson). By 1907 Wichita City had become an independent city with its own government separate from that of Hutchinson Township (although they shared some services such as fire protection). In 1917, when Wichita merged with Topeka to form Topeka-Wichita Municipality, Winfield ceased to exist as an independent municipality and became one blocklong section within Topeka limits (though still listed separately on municipal boundaries). Today much of what used to make up Winfield has been destroyed or replaced by development around it; however many original buildings still stand including Maynard's Store which closed down in 1984 but remains standing as a museum across the street from where it once stood. The "Olde Depot" also stands today hosting events like antique car shows etc., though it is not currently used for business purposes due to vandalism problems recent years have seen there becoming more often than not associated with local high school dances etc.). The first post office in Winfield was established in 1872. The present post office was established in 1902. Winfield has two schools; the first opened in 1907 and the second opened in 1978. The city of Winfield is located within the town of Winfield. It borders Osborne County to the south and east, and Ottawa County to the north and west. The city of Topeka lies adjacent to it to the east and northwest, while Shawnee Heights lies adjacent to it to the north-northwest . In 2006, Topeka annexed much of Shawnee Heights which had a population of over 100,000 people until that time as part of its Comprehensive Plan process for expanding downtown Topeka by creating an expressway through inner city areas that are not currently served by public transportation (and some who have suggested that this annexation constituted unconstitutional zoning). This action created a conflict between Shawnee Heights residents who wanted their own municipality (similar to what happened with Wichita beforeTopeka annexed Saint Anthony Falls), and Topeka officials who contended that because Shawnee Heights falls within City limits there would be no zoning issue with annexation due to both historical ties between both towns as well as commonalities such as infrastructure needs which are shared by both cities including water access, education facilities etc.. In November 2009 Topeka voters passed a resolution opposing annexation into Shawnee Heights; however this resolution did not stop any further expansions into what had once been their hometown despite strong opposition from Mayor Greg Stanton & other leaders within Topeka
