Winfield is a town in Barton County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. Winfield was named for General Winfield Scott and his brigade of regulars during the American Civil War. The community began as a small farmstead on the east side of the Arkansas River in 1868. A post office was established in 1872, and the name was changed to Winfield in 1875. The first store opened in 1876, and by 1886 there were ten stores in the town. In 1893, a railroad was built through Winfield, connecting it with Wichita and other towns on the Great Western Railway. At that time, Winfield had a flour mill and two sawmills. By 2000, however, all but one of Winfield's businesses had closed or been converted to other uses. In 2007-2008 USDaniels brought about significant redevelopment of downtownWinFIELD into an artsy district called "The Hub". This $10 million dollar project included new businesses such as galleries, restaurants and local bars within walking distance of each other with live music events throughout each night!
