The Wichita Naval Shipyard was founded in 1898. It became the Navy's largest shipyard and produced many warships including the battleship USS Kansas (BB-4) and the destroyer USS Montero (DD-9). The yard also built submarines, destroyers, and other naval vessels. In 1941, when Japan entered World War II, Wichita was one of the first cities to receive military equipment from the United States. The city's mayor, Forrest Claypool, donated a large quantity of tanks and artillery to the war effort. Wichita also contributed ships to the navy's Pacific Fleet. After Pearl Harbor, Wichita became one of America's leading suppliers of munitions to the war effort. In 1945, Wichita hosted a Victory Day parade which included military units from all over America as well as Japanese troops. The city also erected a memorial dedicated to sailors who died during World War II. In 1954, Wichita honored its naval heritage by hosting an international exposition entitled "The Ships That Made Wichita." This event showcased navy warships from all over the world and served as an opportunity for local businesses to sell their equipment to foreign dignitaries visiting Wichita.

The Sioux tribe lived along the banks of the river where they traded goods with other tribes before attacking white settlers in 1827 and 1830. Construction began on what would become Wichita Falls in 1865 by Fallon & Co., a partnership formed by two brothers who later became mayors of Dallas and Wichita Falls respectively. It was not until 1886 when talk started about building a railway through rural areas far removed from downtown Wichita that businessmen decided to invest in land east of town on White Flint Creek which would become downtown Wichita proper
