Gourmet Coffee in Wichita, KS began as a small business in the early 1920s. The first coffee shop was located on 15th Street in central Wichita and served low-quality coffee. In the late 1920s, businessman George Sheppard opened the first Starbucks in Wichita. The store became popular for its high quality and unique coffees. After Sheppard's death, his son, Harry Sheppard, took over the business. From 1970 to 1980, Harry Sheppard ran Gourmet Coffee until he sold it to David Roemer in 1980. In 1990, Roemer reopened Gourmet Coffee as an independent business with a focus on classic roast coffee and creative flavors. In 2000, Gourmet Coffee merged with Two Hands Coffee Company to form One Handed Coffee Co., which still operates today as One Handed Coffees Ltd.. In 1969, two brothers started Mikimoto Joe's Cafeteria on Cherokee Drive north of downtown Wichita Falls. They were the first restaurant outside of Japan to offer gourmet coffee made fresh daily by expert brewers at their location. That same year Mikimoto Joe's also opened Mikimoto Café adjacent to their restaurant which offered sandwiches and other Japanese items for purchase along with drinks from their café area and ice cream for those who wanted it from their restaurant area only

In 1912 Washingtons largest park - Central Park - was established adjacent to downtown with 11 acres (4 ha) undeveloped land donated by civic boosters including Alfred Sloan Jr., editor-in-chief of "The New York Times". On November 4th 1907 oil well No 1 became known as Eagle Ford when fracking began operations there; this event helped spur development westward along Interstate 35W which reached Wichita within ten years thereafter In 1968 entrepreneur Jay Cooke purchased much unleased land east of downtown for $6 million making him one of the richest people in America at that time In 1969 Civic Leader Phil Anschutz purchased controlling interest in AIG Insurance Company which had been based out of New York City since 1923 representing over $100 billion worth insurance policies affecting more than 2 million customers including about 110 steel mills throughout North America He renamed it American Insurance Group In 1982 he sold it back to AIG for $108 million One year later he merged his companies with British Petroleum plc forming Anschutz Industries Incorporated . factory building located northwest corner Tenth Street & Elmira Road closed due to fire on October 9th 1984 but reopened December 14th 1995 after being renovated under Mayor Janice Shaw Jones
