The Topeka National Guard was organized on December 16, 1861. The first commander of the National Guard was Major General James H. Bowen. The guard's first unit was a detachment from the 2nd Kansas Volunteers. The organization grew rapidly, and within two years it had become a brigade under Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer. In 1866, the guard became an infantry regiment and in 1869 it became a cavalry regiment. On July 1, 1870, the National Guard moved from its original location at Fort Riley to Topeka as part of Governor John Evans' attempt to create a national capital city. The guard continued to grow until it reached its present size of over 350,000 soldiers and civilians working in various capacities throughout the country.
Topeka, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas, situated on the Missouri River just south of Saint Joseph, Minnesota and about 120 miles (190 km) south of Wichita. The population was 128,895 at the 2010 census,[1] making Topeka one of the fastest-growing cities in America. Topeka became an unincorporated community on July 1, 1868,[2] and was incorporated as a city on November 3, 1969.[3] It is part of the Wichita- Kaufman metropolitan area. Topeka's history dates back to its founding by French traders in 1821 as Pointe de la prairie. The town grew quickly due to its location near two forks of the river and its easy access to wagon traffic. In 1836, Topeka was chosen as the new site for what would become Wichita Falls, Texas after Fort Riley was destroyed by Indian raiders during the American Civil War. Topeka became home to Wichita Falls' first store and post office in 1840; also that year it received its first schoolteacher training program from New York State Normal School teacher John Fetterman[4]. By 1850 Topekans had built several churches including St George's Episcopal Church which opened in 1851;[5], The United Methodist Church (1857), First Presbyterian Church (1859), Second Presbyterian Church (1860) and Main Street Baptist Chapel (1861). In 1862 Topeka constructed its first public building - a log cabin courthouse - served until 1870 when it replaced an earlier structure made out of logs.[6] In 1867–68 settlers traveling through Central KS came across what they called "the Great Salt Plains". They believed this could be an important future route for irrigation because salt could be grown only where water could be obtained naturally from underground sources such as springs or lakes. This led to development of saltworks around Pointe de la Prairie which produced up to 60% of Kansas' export crop during that time frame[7]. By 1870 Topekans were using more than 2 million gallons per day (4800 m3/day)of water available from wells located throughout central KS for agricultural purposes alone[8]; this increased production so much that by 1880 salt exports accounted for over half all local income[9][10]. At this point topographical factors such as hillsides providing privacy from neighboring towns along Missouri River contributed significantly too farming activity within Topeka limits; however transportation concerns still drove growth with numerous interurban railways opening throughout KS during this period connecting different parts of the Territory while also creating opportunities for manufacturing establishment within downtown boundaries – early examples being American Tobacco Company(1911), Armour Electric Corporation(1912), Standard Oil Chemical Corporation(1920).[11] During World War I efforts were made by both local authorities and Federal soldiers stationed at Fort Riley to rename present day Wichita Falls "Topeka" due then-Mayor James Wickersham’s efforts lobbying against continued use of Shawnee name for town without proper infrastructure support or agreement from other communities living adjacent thereto – ultimately resulting in return naming rights being given back to Shawnee County government upon completion military moveout Effective January 1st 1919.[12][13][14][15] Today many historians credit City Manager Orville Hargrave with igniting downtown business activity during war years leading eventuallyto eventual growth spurt following relocation into present day areas east side main street Vermillion Drive & north side Union Pacific Railroad tracks

On December 1, 1867, a group of settlers from Topeka, Kansas started the first post office in the area. The town was named after General La Salle and was founded on the site of what is now downtown Topeka. The first postmaster was J.H. Kinney. In 1871, Topeka became the capital of Kansas Territory and continued to be its official name until 1907 when it became Kansas City.
