Topeka, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 61,876 at the 2010 census, making it the 26th largest city in Kansas. Topeka is also the seat of Shawnee County. The first permanent settler in Topeka was Levi Coffin in 1835 and he named the town after himself, Topeka being his home town from which he commute to Shawnee Mission (now Overland Park) for work on his farmstead. A post office was established at Topeka on December 1, 1836, and remained open until it was discontinued on May 12, 1907. In 1851 Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech from Hutchinson Hall about "the progress of democracy" in America and this led to Congress appropriating $10,000 for erection of a statue of Lincoln at river's edge adjacent to present day State Capitol Grounds. The cornerstone for the building was laid by governor John Worth on April 14th, 1855; and when completed - just one year before Lincoln's assassination - it became one of America's most famous public works projects. It has been said that if Abraham Lincoln had not died during the construction process three years earlier than planned - or if some other challenger to him as president had won - then history would have taken a different course; because without Lincoln's death there may well have been no Union victory at Gettysburg as celebrated 50 years later!
