Topeka is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas, and the capital of Topeka County. The population was 97,371 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in Kansas after Wichita. The first settler in Topeka was John Evans who arrived on July 24, 1853. He named his new settlement "Topeka" after his native place in Scotland. That same year saw construction begin on what would become known as City Hall Square—the downtown area today including State Capitol Hill and most of Central Avenue—initially using money raised by an auction conducted to finance local improvements such as schools and water systems (the ground sale allowed citizens rather than politicians control over these issues). PCL Construction Co., Ltd.—later called Peabody Construction Company—was founded here by two Polish immigrants working together: Józef Peabody and Franciszek Najmanowski (1860–1937). They are considered pioneers in modernpublic worksmanship and their work helped lead to advances such as elevated expressways and canals throughout much of America during this period.
